There are several ways to knead the strings...which is/are your favorite(s)?

1) The "Rock & Roll" kneading

2) The "Bouncing Jack" kneading

3) The "Sliding Mary" kneading

4) etc...:):D;)

Well, one way or the other...they are all needed to express the player's deep feelings...some pieces require "Rock and Roll", some pieces require "Bouncing Jack" and some require both or more techniques ...kneading is the mother of all feelings.:):D

By the way, I have a youtube video teaching vibrato.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ef5yED8PgAg

I wonder if it helped anyone learn to do a decent vibrato.  This method is rather effective in face to face lessons.  I curious if in a video format it is as effective.

And if there is anything you feel that can be improved on please feel free to let me know.

TB-

Being a clawhammer banjo playing, fiddling, guitar-pickin' OT music fan, I just don't fathom the expression "string-kneading." Sounds like something the wife does before putting the dough in the oven for bread.

(Last time I made a half-way snide remark, I got a couple of tongue-lashings, which made me shy away from remarks like that on forums about instruments I'm unfamiliar with.)

What I had said, actually, was:

WHA???

Brad

Actually I have just trouble with my little finger, the other three work quite well by now. I have been playing five months and enjoy it very much. Right now I'm playing MIHU XIAODIAO, XIZANG WUQU, CHANGCHENG YAO and lot's of excercises.

Hahahaha...I have no idea why some of the Erhu players use the term "kneading"...when I first heard the expression, I had the same mental image as yours...after doing the "kneading" for a while...I can relate to the expression!

I made up the expressions "Rock & Roll, Bouncing Jack and Sliding Mary"...some people might be able to relate to my expressions!

Rock & Roll - one finger touches a fix point on the string and starts to rock back and forth without leaving that spot!...from the observer view...the whole hand rocks...thus the expression "Rock and Roll"...:):D:cool:

Boucing Jack - One finger touches a fix point on the string and starts pressing and releasing the string without moving from that point...player can apply different frequencies and pressures on the string to ehance the expression of feelings!...the hand remains motionless (unlike the "Rock & Roll" hand)...thus I called the process "bouncing Jack".:);)

Sliding Mary - sliding one finger rapidly back and forth over a fix point...thus the expression "Sliding Mary":);):D...Hahahhahaha....well... luckily I didn't call it the "Bloody Mary"!...but I can't relate "Bloody Mary" to the techique...except maybe Bloody Mary can ehance the finger movement to the max.:talk::talk::):D

The video on "Rollong Vibrato" is excellent...clear instruction...good sharing of rouxian technique...I love the close-up shoots.... the term "Rock & Roll" used by this bird is refered to the "Rolling Vibrato" technique... :talk::):D:cool:

I believe most of the players initially would have some troubles with the little finger...it is the weakest finger of all...in fact, one world-renowned Erhu professor suggested that the fourth finger should lend support to the little finger when pressing the string!

I believe "XIZANG WUQU" is in G...am I right or wrong?...you are playing some really neat pieces...have you tried "The Flower Drum of Feng Yang"?

Way to go!...thank you for sharing your experiences with me!:):D;)

My teacher also says to even use third and fourth finger for support. This way I get at least some motion going.

Yes, XIZANG WUQU is in G. THE FLOWER DRUM OF FENG YANG was the third piece I learned.I also played XIAO and  TIANYUAN CHUNSE. Those three are resting now and waiting for me to master rouxian, so they can later have a beautiful comeback.:D

Yes, I agree that rouxian is the mother of all feelings in Erhu...they will have an emotional but wonderful comeback...very happy to meet you here...wish you well!:):):D

Hi SunWAh,
I watched it over and over. Does your finger stay on the same place on the string as it looks like it does? I can't seam to move my hand correctly to do that. I'll bet face to face is the way to go but as you know I'm in America.
Regards -- Lance
