Might be a silly question.......... Is it the back or front string that is bowed first? Or does it matter which?:statue:

Lisa,

It seems as if there are no silly questions when talking about the Erhu.  Although at this point I am teaching myself to play  trial and (mostly) error  method, I have been bowing the "d" string first and going up the scale to the "a" string in first position, which means I am not moving my hand up and down.

Once again, I hope Clyde steps in.  I don't want to start you off on the wrong foot here.

Good news is that I purchased the video instructions from Ebay and am patiently waiting for its arrival.  Hopefully it doesn't end up in my video instruction graveyard along with my fiddle, cajun accordian, piano instruction tapes !!!!!!

All the best,

george

I am still learning the terms and names related to erhu

I have noticed it mentioned slightly , about something termed as "reverse bowing"  but I cannot find an explanation as to what this is. :?

thoughts?

thanks

Den

ohboy!  would this imply that particular notes are to be pushed ,  or pulled,  according to which note it is?

I hadnt even thought of that as being an issue.

I have so much to learn !

My eyesight is not as good as it once was, but I don't see any bow markings in the jianpu sample, Clyde.

Best wishes,

David

Not really. The bowing direction for a particular note depends more one what happens before and after the note, and the type of articulation desired.

Best wishes,

David

so,  each song then would have its own "pattern"?

then after I learn how to play properly for a while,  then a new one would become instintive?

Bowing is more a matter of recognizing patterns and then deciding what works best. There are often suggestions in the score, but it is ultimately up to the player.  If it sounds right, it is.

Don't worry. Bowing is something that comes with experience. I don't usually worry a lot about the direction I bow. You will notice that notes can often be played in more than one position. Deciding on the fingering and position for notes is a more important problem to resolve when I start to learn a tune.

Best wishes,

David

Hi David,

The amazing grace jianpu sample has v and inverted n all over it!

Den, the reverse bowing you read somewhere in this forum might be referring to this:

thanks tansungwah for showing me where I had noticed that article and corresponding phrase.    I had been surfing a lot that night and knew I had seen it but remembered the wrong location.   It does have me wondering if there aint something to it,   maybe other reasons,  but something must be happening.?!  for an example.... if you hold a steel shaft like a screwdriver,, level and facing north south and tap on it with a metal object for a while, it will redirect molecules which will then slightly magnetize the steel shank.  pos/neg alignment.

that is why I would not dismiss out of hand that the guy might be onto something there,   sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.   :statue:

The utilitarian playing method. Ever thought of sharing your gilrfriend? Here's a shot of how three people can play the same huqin at a time.
