Regarding the paypal routine.   mine is set for acquiring the money directly from the checking account routing number.  (the credit card is registered primarily as a backup in the event there isnt enough funds in the checking account)

Banks will allow those under 18 to have a checking account provided they have a joint account with a parents signature.

Maybe this will help Kenichi ?

Hello Clyde,

I am up in NYC and just had my first lesson with my gaohu.  You are going to laugh at this.   He told me it would be very hard to learn to play a gaohu and I am better off to replace it with an erhu.  He tuned it as an erhu but he told me that it would not sound as good as a real erhu.   Basically, I am learning the erhu basic techniques with my gaohu.  I think will sell it on ebay when I get home.

Sung Wah,

The gaohu teacher told me to buy an erhu that is made in Shanghai or Beijing.  Do you have anything that won't cost an arm and a leg :-)?

Meanwhile, I wish you both a Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year.

Will

Hi Will,

Our starter Erhus are very good value for money and very reasonably priced.  If you are easily contented, its good enough to last you a lifetime actually!

You can view them here: http://www.eason.com.sg/products/products_erhu.jsp (Prices will be revised upwards early next year)

Thanks!
Sung Wah

Hi Sung Wah,

After looking at your website of all the erhu that you sell, I am little confused.  My previous post implied that I want to get something inexpensive.  As the saying goes "you'll get what you paid for".  I want something that will sound good even if I only play twinkle twinkle little star and able to stay in tune.   I know you'll tell me that all of them are good.  But you must some favorite in their specific price range.  If I were to ask you what is the best buy in $200 range, what would that be or for that matter the $300 range.  I have already made one mistake by buying the gaohu that I don't like and I don't want make another.  BTW, if I had discovered this forum prior to my gaohu purchase, I would have bought the erhu from you.  The bottom line, I need a little more guidance.  Thanks.

Will

Thanks Will. Would you prefer an Erhu with a mellow and warm tone or a sweet and bright tone? Look for Ebony if you prefer the former and look for rosewood if you prefer the latter.

I'm quite fond of these 3 models in the 200+ to 300+ range.

This is a good model for beginners as well: http://www.eason.com.sg/products/erhu/heh12.jsp.  It comes with bronze tuning mechanisms which allows you to tune more easily.

The Chinese numeric notation is called jianpu. There is an excellent article on jianpu at http://www.wikipedia.org. That should clarify a lot for you. Let us know if you have other questions.

Best wishes,

David

Thanks David. Wow that's alot to learn, but I've got plenty of time and practice to go before this is of much importance. Anyways, I was wondering if there was a place I can go to get Erhu sheet music. Ive been looking all around the web and havent found anything. Anybody have some ideas?

I have run across a few websites in English that have erhu jianpu collections, but they are not really suitable for beginners:

http://www.summerthundermusic.com - arrangements for ensembles

http://www.cadenzamusic.biz/scores.htm - some challenging music, not formatted very conveniently

Occasionally I find scores on Chinese websites, but navigating them can be a challenge without a knowledge of the language. It does help to know a few characters, such as those for erhu. I don't have any websites in mind at the moment, but will keep you in mind.

My best suggestion is to order a erhu method book. You can try the following sources:

Eason: http://www.eason.com.sg

Clarion: http://www.clarionmusic.com/

CCN: http://www.chineseculture.net

CAMCSF: http://www.baymusic.net/

My favorite of the above is Eason in Singapore. The others are in the USA. I would not order instruments from the others, but it is harder to mess up a book order.

Probably the best advice of all is to get a teacher. With my teacher as a resource, I will probably not need to buy any more sheet music. There is also the added bonus that he shows me how to play the music on the erhu correctly. <g>

Best wishes,

David
