Clyde,

I did go that web site that you suggested and saw the picture of the unit.  But I didn't buy it.    But a couple of days later I went back to that web site and found out that they withdrew the bid so went down the page and found this tuner and metronome that looks like one I saw earlier.  It does not have a model # and the brand name is Eleca.   I don't think it is the same kind as yours.  I do have another question though.   Could you tell me what is the function of "Calib/Tempo".   The Calib is in frequency which is displayed next to the selected note i.e. "G"  Is this value have any effect in tuning the instrument.  Thanks again.

Clyde,

I set it to G (440 Hz) and draw the string and got no response.   Sometime the digital needle moves to the red light on the right and it drop back to the red light on the left.   What I expect to see is the digital needle moves as I play.   Regardless of how loose or high tight I set the string, the digital needle is nowhere near the green light.   I called the place that I bought it from all I got was an answer machine.   Like the good old saying "Buy cheap, get cheap".  I'll try to call again and if I don't any response, I think I am going to return it.  Any suggestion?  Thanks again.

Will

Clyde,

Thanks for call for help on my behalf.   After I read your response I went to try it out.  Wouldn't you believe it, the unit works.   I had a preconceived notion as to how the unit works and it turns out that it doesn't work that way.   What I did was set the note that I was looking for and try to get the needle to line up with the green light.   I change it to Auto and the unit tell me what note is being played which makes more sense.  Thank you very much.

I have to ask you two STUPID questions.   Inside string is the one that is closest to my body and pitch wise is the is the D higher then G?  I try it on my piano and I can't tell the difference.   As I wrote on my previous posting, I am tone deaf :-).   Besides the tuner I also bought couple of dvds in learning to play the erhu and they are in mandarin.  I don't think they are too helpful   I am going to sign up for lessons up in NYC when I go up there to visit my kids.  Again, thanks for all the help.

Will

Clyde,

When you tune the erhu, how do you know which octave it is.   With the tuner I went over to my piano and hit the middle C note and again one octave higher and both register as C(still at 440 Hz).   What is consider to be the normal?  Thank you.

Hello Clyde,

I am totally frustrated.   The  instructional dvd shows this lady plays the 8 notes in position one.    When she finishes the 4th note "fa", she lets go all her fingers from the strings and she gets the next note "so".   When I do that I'll go back to "do".   Is it the hand is quicker than the eyes.    I watched it over and over again and yet I can't figure out how it is done.    The next question is when you draw you bow, does it ever touches the vertical post.   I have some rosin powder on vertical post.  Is it a bad practice.

BTW, I just found out that my gaohu is in the mid price range.  I was told that the price of a gaohu is anywhere from 200 to 3000 RMB.  I think the exchange rate is 8(RMB) to 1(US).

Yes she is just moving from the inner to the outer string after FA.

You should strive not to touch the vertical post. Your bow should be travelling in one straight line horizontal.

Clyde, Sung Wah,

Thank you to both of you.

This instructional dvd is in mandarin.   I thought it was a good idea because I am trying to learn mandarin online.   I do understand some of what she is saying but I definitely lost the fine point about swifting strings.   Clyde, I think I still have a problem with the gaohu being properly tuned.    Ever since I tried to tune it with the  tuner, it has not given me the same sound as when I first got it.   Even though the tuner gives me the G and D for inner and the outer strings respectively, how do I know they are in same octave.   I think the inner string is an octave lower than the outer one.  If try to tighten the inner string, the pitch is too high.  The bottom line is that it is too low or too high.   Somehow I seem to miss an octave.   Sung Wah, do you have any new suggestions?

Will

Hi Woodstock,

Check the tension of both strings.  If you feel that the inner string is one octave lower than the outer string, the inner string should feel significantly looser that the outer string.  If it does, you have to tune it one octave up.  The strings of the gaohu, when in tune, feels very taut actually. But wear a pair of goggles or look away just in case you're wrong and the string snaps.

Some tuners does show which octave the note is in.  Perhaps you can look closely if you tuner shows it anywhere.

I recently purchase a silent guitar, and I am interesting that I could play/practice without disturbing my family and neighbors. I just simply plug a headphone to the guitar and play and my wife didn't even notice.

Then I have an idea if I could buy or make an silent Erhu, similar idea to the silent violin, so that I can play/practice without disturbing other people, espcially when I play off-note.

On some post above, Clyde recommended a good tip to reduce the sound volume by replacing the bridge with a stick. It works but the sound is too soft to listen to. Could we buy or build an Erhu and install some kind of pick up & preamp to it?

Anyone have idea about an silent Erhu, please let me know.

Thanks and have good day.

Got the pictures Clyde.  Nice work on the Electric Erhu.  Do you have any recordings?

VVN, you can try this mute for the Erhu if you want to practise without disturbing the people around.  I have a blog entry here:

Sung Wah,

I want to replace the strings that Clyde sent me so I watched your video on replacing the strings.   But you didn't show how to hook the strings on the bottom.   Looking at my gaohu, I can't seem to see how it is done.   Any suggestions?  Also to keep my wife's sanity, I will order the "mute butterfly" from you.   Is the payment going to be via paypal?  I might have to open my own account instead of keep on using a friend's.  Thanks for your response.

Will
