One correction to the section about Liu Tianhua is that he is not the composer of The Second Spring Reflects the Moon (Er Quan Ying Yue). That honor belongs to A Bing (Hua Yanjun). Liu Tianhua did indeed compose some of the most wonderful music for the erhu including my favorite Liang Xiao (Beautiful Evening).

Best wishes,

David

I have never used a violin bow to play erhu, but I imagine that it would be more difficult than using an erhu bow. A violin bow is intended for playing on only the outside part of the horse hair, while the erhu bow is rosined on both inside and outside for playing both strings. The violin bow stick is curved out, which would likely provide some challenges. I think that stick would not have the right amount of flexibility needed for playing inside and outside strings. Maybe it would not matter for very simple tunes, but when playing fast or for music that requires much bow control, a violin bow would not be good to use.

While a good violin bow often costs thousands of dollars, a good erhu bow might only cost $20, so it should not be too difficult to get the right bow for the job.

Best wishes,

David

Thank you Clyde, and may your 2007 be all you hope for.

I am a strong advocate for getting a good white horse hair bow for playing erhu. I have run across both black hair and nylon "hair" on bows, and these only make playing well more of a challenge. Rosin does not stick to the nylon hair very evenly. I have heard players who did well enough with a nylon hair bow. It is certainly possible to make up for instrument problems with skill and practice, but I suggest providing oneself the best chances for success.

Black horse-hair is suitable for jinghu. White horse hair is best for gaohu, erhu, and zhonghu. There are Beijing and Shanghai styles for the hair bundle. I prefer the Beijing style (flat), but this is a matter for personal preference.

Best wishes,

David

Hi Clyde,

Could you or some of members write some instruction about Chinese notation system, and give some exercise lesson for begginers like me to practice Erhu?

Thanks and have a nice evening.
