Hi everyone,

I just started learning the banjo and I'm really excited about finding EZ Folk.

I'm trying to get some good clawhammer instruction books with DVD's, and I was looking at a couple by David Holt ("Clawhammer Banjo 1 & 2"). I saw David Holt play with Doc Watson and I really enjoyed it. I was wondering if anyone had tried these and if they would recommend them. And if not, are there other instructional videos that people really like?

thanks,

Mike

I don't know if he has videos, but check out Dan Levenson's "Clawhammer From Scratch" book and CD's method (Mel Bay). They are what I recommend for any CH beginner. If you are interested in the "real" OT music (fiddle tunes), this is the book for you, because it starts out in Double-C and moves to Double-D, where much of the Old Time fiddle repertoire is played.

Another good book is Ken Perlman's "Clawhammer Style Banjo".

Be sure to check out Richard's tutorials here on ezFolk, and look for "Rocket Science Banjo" tutorials on YouTube, by Old Woodchuck. He has a nice set of instructional material that can be found at http://www.banjohangout.org or soon-to-be on the Web (I'm building his website and it should be ready "Real Soon Now!"

Hey Mike,

The ones Brad mentioned are good resources but I think you'll really like David Holt's DVDs as well. You know from seeing him with Doc that he's an outstanding player. I haven't actually seen his videos but back in the day (I think it was 1976) I took a week-long clawhammer workshop that he taught at Fiddler's Grove and he was a fantastic teacher even back then.

Good luck with the banjo!

Brad and Richard,

Thanks so much for the advice. I'm definitely going to check out the Dan Levenson book - that sounds right up my alley.

Richard, I really enjoyed your banjo instruction videos on EZ Folk. They're very clear and easy to follow, and I really liked how you broke everything down into basic steps. It makes everything seem much easier. And now I'm really looking forward to taking on "Keep on the Sunny Side".

thanks again,

Mike

I forgot to mention on the David Holt videos. I've never used or even seen any of his stuff, so I couldn't have commented on them either way.

I have David Holt's whatever the one before clawhammer 1 is and it is excellent. This enthusiasm is contagious!

David Holt Clawhammer Banjo: Repertoire and Technique Vol 1 and 2 are NOT for beginners. David does have a good one for beginners (it was my first) as alluded to above, though I dont recall the name.

I have David Holt's Clawhammer Banjo #1 and 2 videos. I also have Dan Levenson's Clawhammer from Scratch video. I've seen a few others. Here's my take.

If you are just starting out, don't bother with David Holt's tapes yet. Get those in a year or so. He is giving you repertoire and some intermediate technique on those, not teaching you to frail. When you want to spice up your playing and you have a good solid technique, come back and get these. Worth having at that point.

If you want a totally simple walk-through on how to make the basic frailing stroke happen, David Holt's Get Started on the 5-String Banjo is a really good tape. Baby steps, but without talking down to you. Not many folks who are good players can do this. Highly recommended if you are trying to get your Bun-Ditty groove on.

If the Bum-Ditty comes fairly easy for you and you want to learn a basic tune that will give you a lot of very good practice with timing and with the up and down motion, Dan Levenson has a video that just covers Spotted Pony in its basic form. Very helpful. He has a very different sort of teaching style on video from Holt, but just as effective (still rare to find). His follow-up video is supposed to introduce more technique and fancy stuff, but I have not seen it.

For another (also different, also excellent) presentation, check out Patrick Costello (he has some of his tutorials up on You Tube, so free) as he teaches basic frailing. This guy is easy to offend, it seems, and he seems to enjoy razzing other folks on banjo fora, but he is one of the rare folks able to truly convey good information via video.

For books, Dan Levenson's From Scratch is great. Wayne Erbsen also deserves some love, here. I still prefer his first book for the Ignoramus, as I like his home-grown tablature method better than commonly accepted standard format (his revamped book has the modern version). Very skeletal versions of the tunes, well laid out.

That about covers what I have actually had exerpience with. Have fun!

-Patrick
