Well I've been plugging away for about 6 months learning to play my banjo. I've got about 3 songs I can play and sing reasonably well Bile them Cabbage Down Sourwood Mountain Barlow Knife Then there's about 20 that I've done some serious messing around with. I've been following all the posts about different tunings and finally decided to venture to the dark side, tuning in other than good ole regular G tuning. After searching through a bunch of different songs and trying to figure what the different tunings are I settled on Ole Woodchuck's Cripple Creek. I love that song but I haven't been able to play it and make it sound good. This version is Open C tuning. I figured ok well he says to put this capo thing on and put my 5th string under the railroad spike. I pretty well knew what was in store for me and what was going to happen. I just knew them ole strings were gonna blow up in my face and probably put my eye out. So I put my face mask on that I use when I dive for gold. I figured if them strings could penetrate the glass in my face mask, well then, it was just meant to be to lose an eyeball. So on with the face mask, on with the capo and under the railroad spike went the 5th string, well almost. The 5th string wouldn't fit under the railroad spike. I guess since i hadn't done this before it would require some serious wigglin''which it did. So far I was safe, nothing blew up. So it was time to strike a note, which I did. Amazingly nothing bad happened so i played some more notes. Dang, that sounded real good and nothing blew up in my face. It was amazing, a song I love and couldn't play before sounded awesome. That ole banjo juest sang out loud, so i started singing along with it. Durn if my voice didn't actually sound pretty good with it. So I sat there for 20 minutes playing Cripple Creek, i was a playin and a singin Cripple Creek and having a good ole time. Then I realized I still had my face mask on. Feeling kind of silly, I took my face mask off and went back to playing and having a good ole time. After about a day working on Cripple Creek, I started feeling adventurous and knowing Banjo Brad had a bunch of good tabs, I ventured to teh dark side again. I remembered Brad talking about a tuning called Mountain Minor so I searched his site and found Pretty Polly. This is another sound i love but couldn't play worth a hoot. I first heard Laura Baird play it. I really didn't know anything about banjos or clawhammer at the time, but it is the first song i used on our videos and I knew i liked the sound. Later I learned the sound that hooked me was clawhammer banjo. So, I took the capo off and released the G string from under the railroad spike and I looked at my diving facemask sitting on the table. I figured, well now that I am a season diffrent tuning banjo player, I didn't need that ole diving mask after all. So I tuned my 2nd string down to C and started playing Banjo Brad's version of Pretty Polly. Dang, another tune I couldn't play worth a hoot sounded awesome. I don't know what it is but them ole notes are just a poppin off my banjo. Now i can't sing like Laura, probably never will, can't play the banjo like her either, but the sounds I'm making I like. The best news of all is I still have 2 eyeballs in my head, I don't have to use my facemask to play my banjo...and I have 2 new songs to play to boot. So, thank you Ole Woodchuck for your Rocket Science Banjo and Banjo Brad for posting tabs on your website and talking about different tuinings. Tinpan
