Hi guys,

some regualrs may have seen my posts in some of the other instrument forums, but this is my first in here, basically because im stuck!
Right i can do the finger picking technique done, easy. I dont consider myself too bad for a 19 year old englishman! But this clawhammer has got me totally, and yes i have been practicing what i think is right, but im not sure if this is the correct way, when i listen to the mp3's on this site i just cant even work out how its done let alone play it!
Can anyone find it in their heart just to write out the most bog standard clawhammer tab, just a tiny ecerpt to get this technique.
Thanks for reading hope you guys can help

Hi Moose,

I don't a thing about the Loudon Wainwright song, but if you're looking for clawhammer banjo tabs there are plenty of them on ezFolk and most of them have corresponding MP3s. Here's a link to the first page (ABCD)...

http://www.ezfolk.com/banjo/tab/abcd/index.html

You can choose other subindexes from that page (EFGH, IJKL, etc.). There are also some clawhammer tutorials in that section...

http://www.ezfolk.com/banjo/Tutorials/tutorials.html

Hope that helps!

Richard posted this link in another forum.  It's a helpful video.  Also has a video of what it should not look like.

Hey Jackie,

Thanks for posting that link. It's a really good reference but I can't ever remember where it's at so every time I want to post the link for somebody I end up having to do a Google search to get to it again.

So how's your clawhammer uke playing coming along, and did you ever get a Melody Maker harp?

:hat:

I have to work on keeping steady.  I do fine for about 10 measures, then fall apart, so more practicing is in order to get it in muscle memory, I guess.

Cub scouts need me in March, but I'll try to get to the next CUKES meeting.

No Melody Maker at this point-- I'm trying to decide which ukulele I want next.  I'll post something about it in the uke forum.

Moose -

Welcome to Clawhammer! A great book to check out is right here on ezFolk. From the Clawhammer main page, try the Patrick Costello "How and Tao of Old Time Banjo" link. This free instruction book should really help you get into the rythmn.

Patrick's method is very straight forward, and simple to understand.

thanks guys thats exactly the idiots guide type of thing im looking for, this style is probably the only one that has me totally stumped, and i cant wait to actually be able to play it!
Seems theres so much potential for this one style.
It seems to me the only problem i have is that its kinda in a weird timing, i know it is isnt but thats how it seems.
Anyway thanks a lot for the help guys very very helpful, hopefully i will post a clawhammer composition when I can play it!
thanks
moose :D

As far as clawhammer being a weird timing, I guess it might seem that way to a three-finger roll-picker. Rolls tend to be made of notes of the same value (all 16ths or 8ths or whatever), while the basic clawhammer rythmn is more of an 8th note (bum) followed by two 16th notes (dit-ty), the first 16th being the brush, and the following being the thumbed fifth string.

The strong suit of clawhammer is the rythmn - really much more driving (for me) than the consistant 1234123412341234 of the Scruggs style of bluegrass.

(That last bit is probably a little sour-grapes, I am unable to keep any consistant roll going on the banjo, and when I do, I can't find the melody, so I just don't do bg!)

Hey Moose,

Most commonly you would play the high G (5th string) when doing a bum-ditty on the "and" following the count of 2 and/or 4.

bum dit-ty    bum dit-ty
1   2   and   3   4   and

Does that make sense to you?

It depends on the melody and your playing style, but that's how I usually do it.

Take a look at any of the Level 1 clawhammer banjo tabs and you'll see that pattern most of the time. You can find a listing of the tabs at...

Hey, Richard -
Don't mean to bug you (yes I do!), but where is the tab for "Under The Double Eagle"? - Clawhammer Banjo

Hey Brad,

Under the Double Eagle for clawhammer banjo is still at the top of the list. Problem is the list has been on hold for a while. Hopefully soon though.
