Hi,

Can anyone tell me which tuning this song is usually played in.

And its the same tune as employed for singing 'Long Steel Rail', right?

Regards,

Harry.

f#, D, F#, A, D.  See http://www.zeppmusic.com/banjo/aktuning.htm
But Long Steel Rail (as Fred Cockerham played it) was gGGBD (again, see the tunings list on Zepp's website)

Hi Shamrocker,

Apologies, if the forum is not the best place for this.

Glad to see your entries, I'm also from Dublin.

I am only starting clawhammer banjo (a few months) and am currently using a borrowed instrument as 5 string banjos arent that common in Dublin. So im looking to invest in a half-decent banjo and need some advice.

I've searched on the web to find someone in Ireland, let alone Dublin who has a similar interest and am interested in making contact which will hopefully benefit both of us ib our musical journey.

Regards

Alan.

Check out the bluegrass version by Leftover Salmon, (odd name, good musicians).

Also and more important for your question, look for an old (50's-ish) recording by a group called The Osbourne Brothers. Their version is called Ruby or sometimes Ruby Are You Mad? with interesting lyrics. They did it with two banjos. One tuned in open D as above. The other in C-tuning (gCGBD) capoed up two frets.

Hey, thanks for this... I was figuring out how to play this tune in 'standard' banjo tuning and found it almost impossible...

Thanks again!

It can be played in Open-G. It's comes sout a little different but not wrong. Play it in the key that works best for your voice.

Consider playing it in gCGBD, in C-major. It let's you capo up four frets to E-major. THe tune sounds great with a guitar backing you in there. The high banjo and the deep guitar makes the song roar.
