Hello to all from Dublin, Ireland. I'm just starting clawhammer lessons and I'm looking at getting a dirt cheap banjo to get me going. Anyone tried one of these here ebay machines?: http://tinyurl.com/23skex "Richwood" is the make. This is a great site BTW. Congrats and thanks to the folks who put it up and keep it going. All the best to you, Harry. Last edited on Tue Jan 8th, 2008 12:33 am by Shamrocker. |

Hi Harry, Thanks for joining us on ezFolk! I'm not familiar with the Richwood banjos so I really can't say for sure, but there are a couple of things I don't like about that one: the lack of an armrest and the friction peg on the 5th string. I'd get something with a geared 5th string peg if at all possible and the armrest is really helpful too because without it the brackets and the edge of the banjo tend to dig into where your lower arm meets the banjo and that can get pretty painful. Andy Perkins has a UK banjo site and sells a lot of banjos and from what I hear is very reliable, so if you haven't checked him out be sure to take a look. You can find the site here... http://www.andybanjo.com/ I think he would steer you in the right direction on getting a good beginner banjo if you'll ask him. Hope that helps!

looks to me like a generic Asian starter banjo, these things are available under a wide range of brand names, known and unknown, but they are all pretty much of a piece I wouldn't bother. You can get an Asian "no-name" for £85 to £90 with a bit of shopping around, if that's what you want I agree on the geared 5th peg and armrest. Personally I would either budget under £100, or budget up to £200 and look at Andy Perkins' range, he gives good advice as well

Hi Shamrocker,I purchased a Grafton Popular from Andy Perkins last month and i cannot fault it.Ihave not looked at the one on ebay but i think you want to spend at least £125 Plus to get anything decent,i also recommend you buy a electronic tuner for £15--20.

I started with a Grafton Popular and I still pick it up from time to time because I like it., and I have a Gibson RB250 sitting in the corner... good sound instrument with a nice tone, good tuners and a stable set-up. got an Ozark 2109G as a travel banjo too, another good buy. There is plenty of cheap junk covered with 'pearloid' inlay for £125 if you want it, but for around £200 there is much better value... for £200 you get an instrument you will probably keep because you still want it Last edited on Wed Jan 9th, 2008 09:13 pm by cockneybanjo |
