Hi All: Not sure where this came from , when I first started playing Clawhammer Style it sounded like bum-ditty. Now I hear it sounding like Chug A Boom. I have had to hear this someplace.. It sounds OK but I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong. I don't think I'm hitting my thumb as b/4 this new sound. When I practice the Bum-ditty I pull up on the 5th string each time. But when I play any song it seems to me that my thumb just stops many times on the 5th string , not sure this is good or bad. Thanks Again Heydaye

"when I first started playing Clawhammer Style it sounded like bum-ditty. Now I hear it sounding like Chug A Boom. I have had to hear this someplace.. Actually, the Chug A Boom sounds to me just a different way to say "Bum-Ditty." "I don't think I'm hitting my thumb as b/4 this new sound." Have you changed your stroke in some way? I don't quite understand what you're trying to say, here. "When I practice the Bum-ditty I pull up on the 5th string each time" Ok, maybe what you're doing here is what is called "double thumbing." This sequence adds another thumb-stroke between the Bum and the Ditty. It would be said more like a "Bum A Ditty," and would work like this: Middle (Index, whichever) finger strokes a note (Bum) - 1/8th note value Thumb sounds the fifth string (A) - 1/8th note value Middle finger executes the strum portion (Dit-) - 1/8th note value Thumb sounds the fifth string (-Ty) - 1/8th note value So, either way is a valid stroke, and would be used depending on the tune. Do I have a handle on what you're talking about? Let me know, and we'll get it worked out. Maybe you can post a sound file? Brad

Brad: I think you hit it on the head. It appears when I hit my first note and bring my thumb to rest I must be hitting the string , and then I strum and finish with my thumb. I wish I had a way of sending you my sound but my computer is so old . I really appreciate your reply. You should see me when I start, it looks as though I have never seen a banjo, my hands shake and it takes m e @ 10 minutes to settle down. But I'm really having fun. Thanks Again Heydaye

Heydaye- Take a look at the two videos on my artist page - they might help you. I play the tune "Skip to my Lou" in straight clawhammer. The trick is to just remove the thumb from the 5th string after the first note, but pull the string after the strum. Try playing through your tunes a little slower, and watching for the thumb action needed. "But I'm really having fun." And that's what I'm talking about!
