I just uploaded a new video on doing the bum ditty on clawhammer banjo.

It's a little over 9 minutes and it's a fairly large file -- about 20 MB -- so if you have trouble streaming it you can download it from my MP3 page.

Here's a direct link for streaming:

http://ezfolk.com/audio/play.php?band_id=2&video_id=262&mode=video

Feedback is welcome!

Good job on the video! It seems very straight forward. I've been having a hard time trying to explain this to a friend of mine that's new to banjo. I'm going to forward this to him and see if it helps.

Hey Thomaston,

Glad you liked the video! I'm definitely in video mode right now and unless something happens to thwart me (like it usually does) I'll be adding many more instructional videos on ezFolk.

I uploaded another one yesterday that is just an introduction to clawhammer banjo as it is taught on ezFolk. You might want to forward that to your friend as well. Here's the link...

Richard, very nice video.  Wish you had had this here a few months ago.  Can't wait to see your next video.  I can learn so much more from video than just audio.

HI Richard

The video is fabulous! I am new to banjo having played guitar for years! However because i have always picked up i am finding the down pick very difficult! Are there any times when you pick up cos i can get a similar sound> I do want to do pure clawhammer though-any tips?

thanks

bill

Bill,

I think for "pure clawhammer" you'd want to always pick down but there are a lot of different ways people end up doing it. There's nothing wrong with picking up if it works for you. That's Pete Seeger's main way of playing and he ends up with a really nice sound that is very similar to clawhammer.

Hi Richard

Have used your, Patrick Costello's, and Banjo Brad's videos. I particularly like the exercise at the end of your video where you pick up and down the strings ascending and descending on the bum ditty.

I also like the part of how to use the string below to halt the downstroke. I've got a hand action that feels more like knocking on a door for the 'bum' stroke of the bum ditty. Is that the right idea?, it makes a strong note and is starting to sound like it should.

Thanks for taking the time to record and post such a video, and of course to Pat and Brad for theirs.

Cheers

Roj

Yup! That's the goal - the Dit part should be somewhat similar, like letting your hand slide down the door after the knock.

Brad

After years of strumming I finally have found a way to learn the clawhammer and  fingerpicking styles. Thanks for the great videos, they are great are great!  Question, am I just confusing myself trying to learn both at the same time?:?

Hi JCBPa,

I think you should be able to learn both at the same time. The left hand is basically the same so you're just dealing with two different techniques with the right hand, which shouldn't be a problem. It's kind of like learning the guitar and spending some time each day with flatpicking and some with fingerpicking.

If you feel like you're getting confused you could always just concentrate on one or the other for a while.

I'd say you should probably at least get familiar with the technique before trying the Level 1 songs on ezFolk.

If you just want to play some melodies of course you could just pick out the melodies from the melody arrangements but that's not going to take you very far in actually being able to play.

The bum-ditty (at least the way I teach it) IS the foundation for this style, so it's a good idea to get the basics down before going to something more complicated. It takes a lot of practice, but don't let that discourage you.

Dusty... I just tried the two links above in this thread and they streamed fine.

Can you give me a specific link (or two) where you're getting the 404 errors?

On your MP3 page.  If I use the Flash Video link and try the DL button for the BUMDITTY,  The DL link gives me
Not Found
The requested URL /audio/bands/2/yes was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Your MP3 Link.  Videos, Flash Video, first page Bumditty DL.

I get the same for all of the Banjo DL links on that page.

Dusty, I'm not seeing the same thing that you are apparently. We're talking about this page?...

http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/2/video.php

If I play the videos through the Flash Video player at the top of the page I don't see any option for downloading.

If I'm not using the Flash Video player at the top and just stream the videos individually they seem to play fine. I did notice that if I had the Flash player playing a video I couldn't stream another video at the same time on the links below the Flash player. Maybe that's what you're running into.

I also noticed none of the videos are available for download on my regular video listings but some of them are available for download on the charts...

http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/2/video_chart.php

... so there must be a bug of some type there although I don't have time to look into it right now. When I get time I need to go in and see if they're set up for downloading or not.

No hurry.

Yes that is the START PAGE.  If you look you see a "Flash Video" tag/link on some of them.

That takes you to another set of pages.

On those next pages some of the files have a Download button next to the play button.

As you mentioned that the Bumditty

"-- so if you have trouble streaming it you can download it from my MP3 page."

could be DOWNLOADED, I attempted to do so and the NOT FOUND popped up.  Any of the DL buttons on those pages gives me the NOT FOUND.

Not a big deal.

Here is the page/pages I am talking about.

http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/2/video_albums.php#Flash_Videos

Those labeled as VD are the offenders.

I know you are busy, so don't make a big effort.  I was just wondering why I couldn't DL the files and if anyone else was having the same problem.
