Hi, does anyone know of any Tsugaru Shamisen Teachers in the NYC New York City area? Doesn't matter if you're not a professional teacher, but if you're willing to teach, I'm willing to learn.

Any Shamisen (Tsugaru or Nagauta) enthusiast may contact me too if you are willing to share some time to exchange some playing tips. I'm always willing to share what I know~

Heck, if you want to learn the fundamental basics, I'm willing to give a basic lesson and share what I learn from books.

Sure, I'm willing to give some free lessons on the basics in the park or something. Just PM me if you're planning to be in the city with your Shamisen. I might not be a master, but I know basic to intermediate skills regarding the Tsugaru.

Regarding school, you can also learn Shamisen basics at the Sawaii Koto School. Nagauta basics are mostly the same as Tsugaru ones.

I can meet you somewhere in the city like Union Square or St Marks. I always wanted to perform in the city. LoL

Do you have any Tsugaru books or something? I don't have much materials, best is that if you have a book or something I can just follow and teach stuff from. So you can learn it and practice at home.

Cool then maybe you'll definitely do better than me in the Tsugaru Shamisen. I can't really play by ear, most of it sounds the same to me. Well, that and I don't have any music background. But if you can play by ear, we can work together to do the Yoshida Brothers duel style of play for songs.

We'll hammer down the rest of the details using PM, check you're account's Inbox. I'll bring my bachi and yubikake for the first time. Later on I'll bring my's Tsugaru out and we can perform Rokudan in the park.

BTW, you're not using this book right?

I hate this Tsugaru School's style of play.... and its the worst book for the Tsugaru in my opinion.

no, i don't have that book.  i only have about 5 pages of music, and its all in Japanese.  I can't even read the tempo its one big guess.  Im guessing it's 3/4.   I play mainly by ear too.  This is the first music im trying to read just because i can't move the bachi that fast yet.

What song are you trying to play from the book your using? Usually these intro books that they include with a starter set Shamisen stinks, its full of random kids song written for Nagauta or Jiuta that doesn't sound good on the Tsugaru anyway.

Yeah you’re right.  They sound so random.  I just figured out my tuner was not calibrated so now I sound a little better.
Check your inbox i sent a bunch of links that have stuff for the tsugaru. Some are in japanese so you will need a translator.
 peace

Your D-A-D configuration still works for Niagari songs, I personally think that D-A-D sounds better for songs like Tsugaru Jinku. But for Rokudan and something like Tsugaru Yosare, I would use C-G-C.

But if we do perform together, keep your D-A-D configuration so it sounds just alittle different but matching, that would sound great!

Did you buy your Tsugaru from one of those sites you gave me?

I think some songs sounds alittle better in C-G-C, but that's just personal preference. Try the short one that I just slapped up on a blank score sheet in both and see what you like better in Niagari Tuning (that's what the tuning style is called):

Man, typing a score isn't as easy as writing one.... LoL

Wooh, I can't wait.

Even if the instructor doesn't teaches Tsugaru ask him or her if she knows any Tsugaru Instructors in NYC~

*Update*
Hey, here's a gift. I just figured out how simple the intro to "that song" is.... *Don't write the band's name or the song's name on the message board so search engines can pick it up here.  Just in case we might get in trouble with copyrights and all that mumble jumble..... the Japanese don't kid with that stuff *

I was just messing around and I stumble on figuring out the tune. LoL

I know some of the new Tsugaru learners aren't into the traditional tunes so you can practice this song too. We can work on the rest of the songs when we get better. So have fun~! Damn I hate typing scores.

i had my first lesson today and it was preatty good.  She gave me some sheet music to practice.  She performs in kabuki so the shamisen is not tsugaru.  But i feel i will learn something good!
