I don't hold out much hope for this one but on the off chance ..

I am looking for a Clawhammer Banjo Instructor in the South East of England (60 miles west of London along the m4).

Thanks,

Mark

Mark,

I live 80 miles west of London along the M4 and consider myself in the South West.  Where do you live?

Jody

Hi Jody,

You can't be that far from me then?

I am in Thatcham, Berkshire. Where abouts are you?

Thanks,

Mark

I am near Swindon :)

Although I don't consider myself a teacher, we could probably try and get together for some old time playing and swapping knowledge :-)

ahh, you are just down the road then (well, a couple of junctions down the M4 anyway ;)). I used to live in Swindon a few years back (right next to the County Ground & The Magic Roundabout).

I would love to take you up on your offer Jody but I am afraid the knowledge swapping would be very much one way, I am very much at the beginning of this particular journey. Only being 4 to 6 weeks in I haven't really got any tunes down properly yet, I am able to Bumditty along fine alright (I think! :)), I'm happy with some of the easier chords, even happy to throw in a few hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides here and there but I've not really progressed to pulling out the melody yet (apart from bits and pieces).

For instruction I am currently using a combination of resources: Patrick Costello's online workshops (which have helped with the basic frailing strum and also the chord changes), a few tabs from here at EZF (thanks Richard) and I have just purchased Dan Levenson's Clawhammer from Scratch (not really pursued this one properly yet though, I have only had it about 2 weeks, I am currently working through Double Thumbing plus Drop Thumb on a couple of tunes - slowly! I have not used Dan's book since buying the new Grafton though - I really should!)

If you do fancy taking on a Student I would be more than happy to pay for your time. If you didn't want to or couldn't take me on formally (even for a short time) but could spare me a little time just to point me in the right direction I would be very very grateful.

Thanks,

Mark:2banjo:

Mark,

I didn't realize you had not been playing that long :)

I remember how hard it was trying to find someone to help me out!  I have found other players here and there, but no one who I could regularly meet with.  It's usually by going to festivals and any workshops I hear about where I get tidbits to learn from and OT players to help me along.

I have been playing a little over three years.  Self-taught with a few workshops under my belt.  I go to a fortnightly jam session which has helped loads with timing and stretching my abilities.  In fact, I just got the nerve to bring my banjo uke last night to the jam session and didn't do badly :-)

I wouldn't want to consider myself a teacher, but would be happy to get together and help you with what I have learned.  I have the teaching material you have mentioned and have learned a lot from it.  In fact, I have lots of books, DVDs and CDs I still use for instruction.  I am very partial to Mary Z. Cox's music and use her tab for learning a lot of my tunes.

Jody

I was in Horsemonden, Bath and Bristol last week. There are an awful lot of banjo players roaming that part of the UK - and most of the folks who came to my workshops are ready to start teaching.

When I say "teach" I don't mean the pay-for-play weekly lesson format. That won't work with frailing. All you need is somebody to show you the basic strum and a few chords.

Contact Danny over at http://madgeniusmusic.wordpress.com/ and ask him about the mailing list he is putting together so that my old students can start networking.

Darn Patrick!  I didn't know you were so close to me!  I heard you were near London and tried to get in touch with someone who knew your whereabouts, but he didn't get back to me..  And then you went to Bristol and Bath???  I definitely would have come to your workshop!  The trouble with this country I find is that most things are word of mouth and you better be in the right place to hear them....  grrrr.

Hope you had a good time!

Jody

Bristol was a hoot. Turns out one of my students is a firefighter for the Avon fire and rescue squad - and on my last night in town I spent the night in the firehouse. Had dinner with the squad and everything.

I kept everything posed on my web site as much as I was able - but I have so many students in the UK it would have been impossible to contact everybody. It's all moot now. From what I saw it looks like the next generation of players in the UK and Germany are ready to start doing stuff without input or guidance from the USA.
