Actually, just about any basic guitar song is available as a tab, or chord and lyric sheet online.  Just get a Bari uke chord chart, and you're off to the races.  I'd suggest Dr. Ukes site (google is your friend with this kinda thing.)  Of course he likes songs like Camptown Races and Yankee Doodle...s you might no like it.

There are tons of serious guitar tab sites...just be aware that the chords are called by the same name, but lots of them are formed differently.

The chords which use the lower four strings on a guitar (nearest your knee) are mostly the same as on the bari uke -- since we usually tune the 4 bari uke strings like these strings on the guitar.  Of course musicians (I think) call these the higher or upper strings.

There are a million reasons why the baritone uke is a great instrument...good tone...ease of playing...one to one ratio between fingers and strings.

Just jump on the guitar sites and go to it.

You don't really need to find "baritone uke songs"; any song that can be played on a guitar can also be played on a baritone uke.

A baritone uke is tuned DGBE, just like the 4 highest strings of a guitar (which is EADGBE).  For that reason, any guitar song can be played on the baritone uke, except the chords are simpler, because the 2 bass strings that a guitar has are missing.

See, I told you those musician guys call them the higher strings.  Guess 'cause they sound higher.  :)

Give those nylon strings a chance to stretch or they won't stay in tune.  You will need an electronic tuner to make sure you are targeting the correct notes to tune the strings up to.  Your uke strings are unlikely to break unless you mistakenly try to tune them an octave higher than normal.   If you are completely new to the process of tuning the baritone uke strings, you should find a guitar (your baritone uke should be tuned the same as the 4 highest guitar strings, DGBE), perhaps at your local music store.

Try this out website out , but make sure you have "standard tuning" chosen, and skip the first 2 strings.

Have fun.  Don't panic.

New baritone uke?  Or older one?

Are you hearing a cracking from the tuning peg?  Or is the bridge about to pull away from the uke?

I've heard older ukes creak a bit when youre moving the tuning peg.  It wouldn't sound like wood splitting/cracking.  Your tuning pegs have a tension adjustment (small screw) and the peg actually could be really, really hard to move because it's too tight.

I have to hope that the string would break before the uke would, but I'd take this to any music store and show a good guitar guy what you've got.

Did you keep the reciept?

One readily available source of music would be the Hal Leonard "Easy Guitar with Notes and Tab" series. These are easy guitar fingerstyle arrangements which means that most of the notes are on the top 4 strings--hence, immediate translation to baritone uke or to a low-G tuned uke (keys obviously transposed). If you are a strummer, the chords with fingerings are also included. There are a wide variety of titles including rock, jazz, blues, Christmas, etc. Some representative titles are: Selections from 100 Greatest Songs of Rock & Roll VH1; Blues Classics; Jazz Standards; and for the current season Christmas Hits, Christmas Classics, and Christmas Favorites. Hope this helps.

What kind of tuning pegs does your baritone uke have?  If the metal posts stick out towards the back of the headstock, they are friction tuners and the "tightness" is adjustable with a set screw at the center of the tuning knob.  If the metal posts stick out sideways from the headstock, as they do on a guitar, they you have geared tuners which may be lubricated with a drop of light machine oil where the gears come together (provided the gears are exposed and not sealed).

I'd make sure I wasn't trying to tune an octave higher than the instrument is designed to be tuned to.

Check your strings against a source (piano, etc.) to make sure you're in the correct octave.
