So, I've got this amazing uke/tenor guitar (see the thread "Anyone know about this old baritone Uke?") that keeps telling me she wants others to hear her. So I'm obeying her (naturally) and have taken her out in public to perform some of the songs she's given me. But now it seems I need a pickup or mic and simple sound system so others can hear her even better. Any recommendations? I don't really want to drill her for a pickup. (Although a strap pin would sure be nice!) So I was thinking some kind of stick-on pickup or a condensor mic, with a little portable amp of some kind. (I need to sing vocals through it at the same time.) I haven't got a clue about going electric, so if any of you can share your experience here, I would sure appreciate your insights. Thanks! Van

Because you have nylon strings on that old tenor guitar, you are limited to using a piezo pickup. Even if you had steel strings (which your instrument was designed for), the sound hole is too small to fit a magnetic sound hole pickup. If you are playing in public, I don't recommend the disc-style piezo transducer (they don't sound that great and finding the sweet spot for mounting it is not that easy). Get a K&K Sound piezo pickup installed with a plug-in jack (this needs to be done at a shop by someone with experience). Have your guitar shop luthier help you to select the best model of pickup for your tenor guitar: http://www.kksound.com/acousticguitar.html Last edited on Tue Oct 14th, 2008 03:44 pm by Will ____________________ Will http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/297/ Loose Change & Friends http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/245/ http://loosechangeandfriends.com The Earth Tones http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/337/ A Bunch Of Coconuts http://abunchofcoconuts.com |

Thanks, Will. I was looking at the K&K products as a probable option. Is there a model you'd recommend? Found some great input on another ezfolk forum and strong recommendations for the K&K big shot, using a preamp, and the Roland Micro Cube or Fender Amp Can. Also, any thoughts on drilling this old tenor?? Must admit I'm hesitant. Van

K&K Sound makes a number of piezo pickups with 1, 2, or 3 transducer discs; the ones designed for guitar have 3 discs and are called the "Western." My band mate had that model installed by a luthier on her 40-year old Martin D-18. The Big Shot is less expensive, but it only has 1 disc and the placement position has to be done perfectly; also, it has a rather ugly, externally-mounted plug-in jack that you have to Velcro/glue to the side of the guitar body. The Western comes with an internal jack that doubles as a strap button. Unless you have experience with woodworking or luthier work, I wouldn't recommend trying to install the pick-up yourself. The sound hole is very small, and without special tools, you're literally working in the dark. Pay a professional to do the job right.
