With all the questions about changing the bari uke sound with capo, tuning and different strings, I thought I'd add a thread about how cool this thing is:

1) Smaller than a guitar -- but produces terrific sound.  Play it in the car, and you still won't hit anyone with the head. (I always wanted a travel guitar.  Now I have one.  A bari uke.)

2) Lots of room on the fretboard for stubby fingers.  Like mine.

3) Lots of cool music on the internet.  Just get the guitar chords for a song, look at the bari uke chord chart and wammo! you're playing.

4) A decent sounding untrument won't cost an arm and a leg.  (Has anyone noticed the prices drop lately.  Guitar stores (the decent ones) have good sounding ukes under 90-dollars.

5) Number of fingers on my left hand = number of strings.

Feel free to add your own ideas.

6) The baritone uke is a great training instrument for beginning players who want to eventually play guitar.  With the same tuning, but with fewer strings, generous fretboard spacing between the strings, and a smaller neck and body, learning the chord shapes and muscle memory is easier than learning it first on a guitar.

7) When you pick up a guitar, people expect James Taylor or Jimi Hendricks.  When you pick up a ukulele, people still think of Tiny Tim.  Even I can beat those expectations.

I bought my first ukulele from my Boss, and Before that I played only guitar. I had my Baritone tuned D G B E (with the G and octave lower than guitar tuning). You can pretty much play any guitar-specific song if you're creative enough. I think the baritone is great for guitarists as a gateway instrument over to ukulele. But that's just me.
