My father taught me to play his baritone ukulele when I was teenager. I don't remember the make, but it was a beautiful mahogany instrument with a wonderful tone. I've since spent the last 35 years playing the acoustic guitar, but would love to play the baritone uke again. From searching the archives, there seem to be more makes and types of wood than I had imagined. I'd like to get some advice before spending a significant amount of money. My budget is ≤$500. Also, if anyone knows a shop in the San Francisco Bay Area where I could actually play some instruments, that would be terrific.

I'm not from your area, and the only shop I know is the Lark In The Morning music store located at Fisherman's Wharf. I visited San Francisco in 2004, but I did not get a chance to visit the store. I have mail ordered some nice instruments from them, including a tenor banjo, tenor guitar, and octave guitar. This is location information I got from their web site http://larkinthemorning.com Lark In The Morning is located in The Cannery at Del Monte Square 2801 Leavenworth and Beach at Fisherman's Wharf Parking at The Anchorage Shopping Center Garage, 500 Beach Street, open lot on Jones Street, and sometimes meter parking in the immediate vicinity. The shop phone number is (415) 922-4277

Thank you for responding. I will try going by there. I've also been checking out the Elderly site and Music Guy Mike on eBay. I'm almost resigned to purchasing without trying, so if anyone has any strong opinions about instruments ≤$500, please don't hesitate to post!

I'd probably bid on this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Harmony-Baritone-Ukulele_W0QQitemZ330233114175QQihZ014QQcategoryZ119025QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I'd put in a high bid 20 seconds before the end of the auction and you'll probably get it for a lot less than you put in, unless someone else is thinking of doing the same thing.
