I started my uke habit about a month ago with a Kala tenor and then an Eleuke tenor. I play guitar, so I thought the tenor would be easier to play with my big fingers than a soprano.

Now I'm considering getting a baritone (I have UAS it seems). However, I like the tuning for the tenor with the high G. Can a baritone be tuned with a high D? I want it to sound like the tenor and soprano, just lower... can it be done?

If so, what string/thickness would you recommend?

Hi Ian,

That's the way I tune my baritone ukes. What I ordinarily do is buy two sets of strings and use the 1st string (E) on the second set for the 4th string and tune it to D instead of E. Works great.

I like tuning the baritone with a high D because it retains the uke sound and it also allows me to play the same arrangements for both ukes without any changes. It allows me to change keys by just changing instruments, so for example, if I'm playing a song in the key of C on the soprano but it's not quite right for my voice I can just pick up the bari and play it the same way but in the key of G instead, which might be better for my voice.

Ah, well that's the spanner in the works then: my voice is , well, let's be polite but it has been compared with cats screeching or chalk on blackboard. So for me, it's the picking and strumming that matters, with the mumbled sounds of singing sometimes escaping my clenched lips...

But thanks for that advice. I hope you're not just stringing me along (sorry... couldn't help myself)
