I am a newbie and am looking to buy a Baritone Uke. I currently just play acoustic gat but think this would make a great little travel type guitar and would also learn me a new skill. From looking on this site, and whats available to me here in New Zealand (& my budget)... i think ive narrowed my selection to these two. Now all i really need is some wise advice on which one to get. I am old school in my thinking when it comes to buying guitars. I want to still be playing this Baritone UKE in 20 years. looks are unimportant to me. I want to buy the best of the two ... Can anyone please advise me ?? Cheers

Hi widowmaker, Between the two of those I'd definitely go for the Samick. I've got one of those and it's really nice for the money. I had one of the Mahalo baritone ukes a while back and wasn't impressed with it at all. Maybe I got a bad one, but I think the Samick would be your best bet.

I was just sitting down to post a similar request for help, when I spotted this post by widowmaker. I too have a SA Mach UK70B barritone and love it. I am a nubie and just happened to buy this instrument which was the only uke in the shop. Knowing little of instrument quality etc, I wanted to ask, since I am learning to play somewhat better, if I need to upgrade to an instrument that would have more noticeable tonal quality, or is this about as good as it gets. I purchased mine about six months ago for $150 new. I know little of its construction as would be compared to a better grade uke. Am I apt to get more satisfaction from a better grade selling at less than $400? I enjoy thumb strumming, but seem to get some buzz when chording in the 2nd and third string area. Of course, this could be me causing that as I am elderly and not so limber fingered. I have gone through three sets of Aquilla strings. either because of wear on the wire wounds at the fret, Or mostly because the 3rd strings pop, twice while the uke was at rest. Since I am hearing impaired, I have to use an electronic tuner set at 440hz, so the string tension should be consistent. Do I need a better brand of strings?

While reading the post directly under widowmakers, it occurred to me that maybe I was not ordering the Aquilla strings for my barritone correctly and that is why I am having so much trouble breaking the third string. I just order Aquilla strings for barritone, without regard to tuning, which is DGBE for me. Do I need to be more explicit when placing my order?

Frankly, I would try a different brand of strings. Aquila baritone strings just don't last very long, period. I tried a set on my baritone and the 4th string broke within 2 days (I had played them less than an hour total). There are also other posters on this board who have reported similar experiences.

I've switched to Aquila Nylgut strings on all of my ukes 5 years ago, and I've rarely ever broken a string. I can strum hard, and I've sometimes played a uke with a pick. It's true that Aquila Nylgut is susceptible to abrasion, and I believe it may be due to an excessive amount of pressure applied to fretting the strings, which will cause the metal fret wires to eventually nick the strings and cause them to break. The trick is to press on the strings with your fingertips just behind the fret wires with the minimum amount of pressure needed to get clean notes without fret buzz.
