I ordered an Oscar Schmidt OU53S Baritone Ukulele on Jan 14th from Musicians Friend. The last delivery date they provided me was Mar 3rd. They have told me that the wholesaler has missed his last 2 delivery dates, so I am a bit pessimistic about the 3 March date!

Does anyone have any info regarding why this backorder problems exist on this particular ukulele. The other Oscar Schmitd Ukuleles don't appear to be back ordered!

I am currently playing my brothers Silvertone Baritone Ukulele which is over 40 years old and in excellent condition....but he is gonna make me give it back after I receive mine! Shucks!!!!

Thanks,

Al

I own an Oscar Schmidt OU53S baritone uke, and when I ordered it from a local store 4  years ago, it was also back-ordered.  I can only speculate, but I think it's because most Oscar Schmidt ukuleles are made with laminated tops, the solid top ukes (that's what the "S" on OU53S means, "solid") are more desireable, and are harder to get.

After almost 2 months it has arrived and it sure is a great looking Uke. I am very pleased with the fit and finished!

It sounds great also. I would have to say it has a brighter tone than the Silvertone Baritone Uke that I have borrowed from my brother!

Now for the funny stuff.....about 2 weeks ago I received an email from Musician's Friend telling me that in 14 days my order would be cancelled because it had been 2 months on back order! If I wanted the order to remain in effect I had to communicate that to them.  I decided to call and see how much longer they thought it might be before I might receive it. The answer was somewhat vague but led me to believe that there was no way it would happen before the 60 days ran out!  So I did not bother to cancell the order! However I did place an order with The Music Guy, for a Kala similar to the Oscar Schmitt,  and let it go at that. He IS a great guy to deal with by the way!

Imagine my suprise when 2 days later I had TWO e-mails of notification that my order had been shipped! One from Musicians Friend and one from The Music Guy! It's OK you can laugh, I did!!!!!

No, I am not gonna keep them both, but I am gonna keep one and I am gonna give the other one to my Dad for his 82nd birthday! See, things do have a way of working out! My Dad has always played the guitar and has always liked Baritone Ukeleles, and is now gonna have his own!!!!

I look for the Kala to get here on Wenesday and I will let you guys know what I think of it!

Al

Well, the Kala Uke arrived right on schedule. It looks very similar to the Oscar Schmitt. Finish and fit is also very good, but in the looks department, for these two individuals, the winner is the Oscar Schmitt!

I also liked the sound of the Oscar Schmitt a little better, and it seems to be a bit louder that the Kala! Close examination reveiled that the top on the Kala is thicker that the Oscar Schmitt, at least around the sound hole.

Since my plan was to keep one for myself and give the other to my dad, I decided to keep the Oscar Schmitt and give the Kala to my Dad.

My dad loves the Kala, he has played it everyday since I gave it to him! He sings gospel music exclusively and plays guitar, auto-harp and now a baritone Ukulele!  He plans on playing it at church at an upcoming service.

I offer this post as feedback to anyone who is considering one of these two baritone Ukuleles! My guess is that you WILL be able to get your hands on a Kala much quicker than an Oscar Schmitt. You will be pleased with either one of the dealers that I used! I have to say however, that "da Music Guy" wins here hands down! This guy is so easy to deal with. That will be obvious if you look around on any of the Ukulele forums!

Which of these two Ukuleles would you be the most satisfied with? I don't know! My Dad and I would probably give you different answers to that question!!!

Al

Based on my mail-order experiences, including a recent order from Musician's Friend, they sometimes advertise items as "in stock" and "back ordered" based on estimates from the manufacturer.  This is so on all items, and I no longer "depend" on their estimates.  I had to wait a while for my OS Koa Concert too.  give us a report when you get it, I hope it sounds as fabulous as my Oscar Schmide Koa Concert.  If so, I may get one myself
