Have been using Martin strings for baritone. The wound ones don't last long. What do you suggest? See where D'Addario offers sets or singles of Aquila and GMS. Any suggestions?

Aquilla strings work best for me.   They used to have the same problem but not anymore.

Is the problem that the metal winding breaks?  I have had this problem on two baritones and with several types of string.  The fact that I sometimes grip the neck too tightly made this problem acute for me.

Both baris had high frets (big fret wire).  I filed and dressed the frets to a larger radius and the problem disappeared, or at least got way better.  Now I use Worth strings anyway (all unwound).  If the strings sit high, I can use Worth browns.

There must be some advantage to the large frets because several manufacturers use them, including Lanikai and Kala.  It could be that players generally prefer them.  I do have one baritone with nice small frets.  It cost $45.  No, not for fixing the frets... $45 for the whole ukulele.  It's an Amigo.  So cost should not be a factor.

I have a vague recollection of reading that some guitar players prefer the sound of strings that sit high but don't remember the specifics.

If JohnB's experience is that Aquila string windings are unusually resistant to breaking, then that is good to know, but I think he's refering to the tone.  If your problem has been that the metal winding breaks within say 25 hours of play, and you find some wound string that lasts longer, then you might  post your experience to help others (I'm sold on the Worths anyway).

Actually, the right thing to do is to press the strings as lightly as you can.  But that only works while you're sober.

Amped, please tell me about Worth strings, and where I can get them. Did you say they were unwound? Believe the baritone is designed for wound strings. Are these all nylon?

Worth baritone string sets contain no wound strings.

Thanks for the links. I'm actually in need of a new set of baritone strings too. I'll try the worth brand. I'm really liking this forum. How useful. :)

I just ordered a set from Worth too. Surprised that unwound strings are used on the baritone on all four strings. We will see how they work. Good luck.

I have been using the ones that came on my uke for a year now. And sadly I just busted my e string. I couldn't get it to go in tune, so I kept tightening it and I think I went up to high and then snap.:?

Not real pleased with Worth strings. The "D" string is sloppy - moves around when pressing. May use the "B" and "E" strings and go back to wound strings for "D" and "G".

I'm not liking the worth strings either.

When they were first put on, I think that they may have improved the sound.

But now that they have been on for a bit, I think they are just loose and wabbly and I don't like the sound at all. It has been hard to keep them in tune too even with tightening the the top screw.

I'm disappointed. I have switched to playing my little uke - a new Stagg - until I can solve the string problem with the big one.

Found this site for buying single strings for baritone uke.

http://www.juststrings.com/daddarioukuleleothersinglestrings.html

Since I seem to break only the wound strings: "D" and "G", I plan to buy a few singles. They sell both Addario and GHS. Both about same price. Any suggestions on which are best. The Addario has a silver coated copper on nylon and the GHS is silver wound on nylon.

My husband Scottuke bought some new strings for my baritone and put them on for me. I believe they are Aqulia Nylagut. I have been very happy with them. The sound quality has been great.

Where are Aqulia single strings sold? I'm not interested in packages of four, as I seldom break a nylon unwound string. Thanks.

I don't know of any dealers anywhere that sell single Aquila Nylgut strings.  Elderly only sells single low-G Nylgut strings, but everything else is in sets.  Besides, mail ordered strings generally have a shipping and handling charge, and you don't save much money buying one string vs. a set.
