When I read your post I had to laugh at MYSELF. I have the same problem but turned 180 dgrees. Fingerpicking good. Chords HARD. You want to be able to pick out a song? All the advice you got was good but here's my 2 cents. Sit down with your uku and play around. I don't mean play the uke. I mean play around. Pluck strings and see what sound they make. See if any of the notes sound like something you know. Play up and down the frets until you get a nice do-re-me scale. Do it over and over. Do it until you can play two octaves. Then try a song. Any song. After a while you will "see" the words of the song floating over the strings. Later when you are trying another song and can't find the note think what it sounds like and your fingers will just go to that fret/string without thinking. Works for me. Now chords...those are as hard as can be! My fingers get all tied in knots and I start to drop my uke in-between them.
