Let me put the question another way:

if one has a baritone uke tuned gcea, is the A at 440 like the soprano, or 220?

help, please, someone.

The baritone uke tuned gCEA is tuned exactly in the same octave as a soprano.  The larger body of the baritone produces more lower frequencies, so the overall sound is much deeper than a soprano uke.

The 440 refers to the frequency "440 Hertz," which is a reference tuning standard for the musical note "A above middle C" on a piano.  Most electronic tuners internally tune to that frequency; some fancier tuners allow you to vary the reference frequency in order to tune in harmony with other instruments that tune to a different reference standard.  However, no tuner that I know of sets the standard frequency down to 220 Hz.

Thanks for that, Will, it answers my question. So all four ukes can be tuned to exactly the same octave - the larger ones have more harmonic resonances.

I suppose the choice is a matter of a compromise between the tone quality you want and the ease of use of increasing fret width as you go larger.
