The Danny Daughtridge Trio

Danny Daughtridge began soaking in American roots music - everything from folk to jazz, blues to bluegrass - at a very early age. He remembers that when he was as young as ten years old he loved the songs of Ira and George Gershwin as well as Hank Williams and Bob Dylan. The songs transported him to a place and time far removed from eastern North Carolina in the late 1980's. In roots music, he heard all the essential ingredients upon which he would base his own work: beautiful melodies, imaginative and intelligent lyrics, and expertly crafted accompaniments.

It is no coincidence that in the same year he remembers first listening to Louis Armstrong and the Gershwins, Danny began playing the trumpet and writing tunes himself, even suggesting to his relatives and friends that he might like to be a famous songwriter one day. As he began exploring the vast territories of American music, Danny mastered over a dozen other instruments along the way including piano, guitar, harmonica, banjo, and accordion, so that he could realize the sounds he was hearing on old recordings and the new melodies he was creating in his mind.

Danny "cut his teeth" in musical performance in church. His father Jay was a pianist for several Gospel groups, and he would often bring his young son along to the little country churches at which the "Gospel Sing" was occurring. When he was old enough to perform himself, Danny sang, blew his trumpet, and played the piano, guitar, or whatever else he could put his hands on in front of people. In fact, performing at church became a weekly routine for Danny, and soon after high school, he took on church music jobs while attending college and graduate school, where he pursued a degree in piano performance.

Danny continued to mature as a songwriter as he transitioned into his mid-twenties. By then, he had written hundreds of songs instrumental compositions, yet he began a new phase of writing that was far more personal and prolific. He developed a songwriting methodology that emphasized deeply held convictions about the primacy of striking melodies and expressive lyrics. His songwriting credo became: "My favorite song is the one I've just written, and my best song is the one I'm just about to write." As the new songs were pouring from his pen, he began seeking opportunities to show off his work to the world.

In December 2005, Danny formed a band with Kim Lyon (accordion, vocals) and Ed Credle (bass guitar, vocals) to add sonic breadth to his music. When the trio began performing publicly, it quickly became known for its tight, professional sound. In the fall of 2006, the group recorded a six-song promotional EP entitled, Nobody Rides For Free. Reminiscent of acts such as Lyle Lovett and Allison Krauss, the Danny Daughtridge Trio represents the past and the future of acoustic American music.

Let me say many thanks to you Richard, and to many new ezFolk friends for all of the feedback and advice. Since I joined the site a few weeks ago, I've thoroughly enjoyed listening to the great music here. Additionally, I've learned a lot through the forum discussions and the instrument tuttorials (which reminds me that I probably should be practicing the banjo right now!).

My bandmate Kim has also made use of the ukulele tuttorials, and she and I have already discussed her adding ukulele to a few of the songs on our upcoming full-length recording this fall. Boy, there sure are a lot of ukeheads out there!

Well, thanks for listening and commenting, and most importantly, let's keep this music alive! By the way, if there are any folks out there from North Carolina, drop us a line if you know of some good places to perform in your neck of the woods.

    Danny
