Facing Life's Challenges with a Song

When Renée was born in 1991, she was already facing a huge life challenge, she weighed in at 2.2lbs, that’s just over a kilo. Nevertheless, she forged ahead and quickly displayed good intelligence, taking quickly to books and the spoken and written word.

At age 6, however, she faced another challenge, she was diagnosed with a narrowing in her aorta and had to go to hospital then and again later to have this corrected. Renée has always been a self maintaining child, gaining just a few close friends, along the way, using singing and books to enjoy the most from life.

Tragedy and despair have always brought out the emotion in most people and with close family deaths every year from the year she was born until age 10, she learned to express herself with singing, prose and songwriting. Learning the piano and vocal training, were her solace and with such a caring teacher, the lessons, moved from this to counseling, most sessions.

Her greatest test of time came in December 2001, when she was involved in an horrific head on car smash, with a combined speed of around 230km/h. This saw her dear friend and Grandmother killed instantly and great uncle die later in hospital. That Renee survived is a miracle, in itself, yet in the hospital she rallied to console every one else, despite a leg broken in 3 places and a badly lacerated throat.

For Renée this was a big turning point in her life, yet still with some struggles, emotionally. When the organization known as Koru Care flew her to Los Angeles with other children with difficulties, she was given funds by the community of her small, home town of Picton. To thank them Renée’s Mum suggested she write the townsfolk a song. 10 minutes later, Renée came to her mother and sang Picton Gold.

Within 2 days many had heard the song and this lead to her singing it live, over the radio, to much local acclaim. It was from this that a decision was made to have her recorded at Creative Places Studio, in Christchurch. This was her first album, consisting of 6 songs and entitled More Than I Can Say.

Renée was on her way, albeit, very small beginnings, but the value in songwriting had been discovered and this together with writing scripts and a fascination, if not obsession of discovering hidden romance in US reality shows also took hold on her life. From this she penned, For The Love Of Saula, which when placed on the website mp3.com.au shot straight to number 1 in the pop section, helped, no doubt, by the fact she had told her friends on the American Idol board of the song and word quickly got round.

For the last 2 years Renée has been a finalist in the Play It Strange, secondary schools songwriting contest, first, with I Am Free and last year with Softbound, yet to be released.

Her 58 or so songs, so far written, include a rap/hiphop number, one of Reggae, some jazz, pop, country flavour, soft rock, all with a distinctive sound that is, unmistakably, Renée Maurice.

Her acquisition of a Yamaha PSR3000 keyboard, late last year, saw her songwriting catapulted to new heights and go from 18 recorded songs to the current 58 or so, which she has been able to record, at home, plugged into the home PC, through a creative X-fi sound card. This is where her songs like Sigueme, L.A. City Beat , Sebastian and Before We Get Better were recorded, plus many, many more.

Renée’s involvement with StarJam has seen her sing her own songs before large crowds and she is popular amongst locals, of her own community.

Despite being a very able scholar, she will not be returning to school studies in 2007, preferring to focus on her script and songwriting, also being a major player as singer songwriter in a local theatre production. Whatever happens, we will be surprised if a few more songs don’t appear during the forthcoming year and those who have interest should expect to hear a lot more of her as time progresses.
