A lot of books and music will say Traditional, Does that mean it is Public domain or does it mean it is just a old time song, I have wondered about this a long time but never heard it explained. Charlie

Traditional means just that. Old and practiced for many many years. Traditionally Thanksgiving has been celebrated for hundreds of years. Public domain covers material that has expired copyrights. A traditional tune, arranged by a particular person in a particular way is a new redition of the Traditional tune and may be copyrighted. But you can do the song your own way and not be violating that particular copyright. A good example is "Sing Taddle O Day". A traditional English folk tune. It has been done by many many artists, and each of them has copyrighted thier rendition.

I don't know, I'm just hoping that the guy (or gal) who is named "Traditional" never trys to protect his work! We'd all be in trouble, then. My understanding of "traditional" music is that it is old enough and has gone through enough of the folk process that the original composer(s) is(are) lost to antiquity.

Silent Night has become a "traditional" song. Originally of German origin, it was written by a priest. You will see it listed as a "traditional" song, but the date (1800 something) and the name of the priest will also be listed. The same is often said or printed about some of the Stephen Foster melodies, which have become "traditional" over time. Literally Tradition is a deeply rooted rule, celebration method, or a mannerism that a society follows. Such as the dietary restrictions of the Jewish peoples and the wearing of a Prayer shawl or kneeling facing Mecca to pray. All Traditional songs are not, and were not written by "Anonymous", although the early Childs ballad collection and others do not credit an author, many others have survived hundreds of years and do have accredited writers.
