Looks like most of their titles are classical, at least by the listed composers. I found less than 2 dozen "traditional" tunes listed.

Today's (8/21/06) New York Times has a long article on music publishers going after tab-sites. Anything to make a buck. They'll probably end up paying more in legal fees than they'll ever make back. Even some musicians and songwriters said this was very small potatoes. But they're pissing in the corners to mark their territory. How are guitar tabs related to sheetmusicfox? Do you think they will go after public domain websites next, even though public domain is perfectly legal?

"Do you think they will go after public domain websites next, even though public domain is perfectly legal?" Ah! That's the question, isn't it? I think that they could very well attempt it, and then back off once the pd site makes it clear that they are true public domain sites, and have proof of their claims. It might even come to a court case. I hope I'm wrong, but my gut instinct tells me I'm not. That said, I would think that Richard would be wary about adding stuff from another site to his site, as that could (and probably would) be construed as copyright theft. A link would probably be ok.

No, I don't think the MPA or NMPA are interested in closing down public domain websites. I'm pretty sure they have already looked at ezFolk and were satisfied that we're trying to keep everything on the up and up here and not post anything that is under copyright. Of course I'm not 100% positive about everything but I'm constantly trying to keep away from things that are copyright. One thing in our favor is that being a folk music website it's not hard to go back before 1923 and get appropriate material. An arrangement of "Old Folks at Home" wouldn't fly too well on Ultimate-Guitar.com but it fits in perfectly at ezFolk. Regarding adding stuff from other sites to ezFolk, that's something I've never done and don't have any interest in doing. I did take a look at sheetmusicfox.com when the post about free sheet music was added and from what I can see everything is public domain as far as it being pre-1923 scans of various sheet music. It's not something I would use on ezFolk because it's just classical music as far as I could tell, but even if it was folk music I wouldn't just go in and take the scans and place them on ezFolk because those scans belong to whoever scanned the music. If I scan an old public domain book I then have the copyright on my work that was done and other people don't have the right to use those scans without my permission. Even though the book itself is public domain, the results of my work is under copyright and can't legally be used without my permission. I do give my permission for individual songs to be used of course, but I don't give my permission for an entire collection to be used on another site (such as the PD Library book "The Melodies of Stephen C. Foster"). If anyone wanted to use that book on their website they would need to obtain their own copy of the original book, prepare the book for the web by scanning and preparing the graphics, then upload their own work to their website. They can't just come in and take my scans, which are under my copyright because of the considerable work and expense that went into preparing them. Know what I mean? Phil, if you read this, we've been discussing the NY Times story in another thread. Look down towards the bottom of this one... http://www.ezfolk.com/forums/forum7/2280-1.html

Richard- You said it much better than I could have. About the posting of other people's work being a problem. I agree that you own the book that you provided on the site, so, that is your intellectual property and therefore under copyright. And, the sheetmusicfox site, as I said, really isn't appropriate for here, I found less than 2 dozen titles when I searched for "traditional" as the genre. I think Steven Foster was the only composer I recognize as an "Old Time" composer.
