I've just started developing a new section on ezFolk that will contain full reprints of music books that are now in the public domain (pre-1923).
I've just finished adding the first 10 books that total around 1,000 pages. I've got stacks of these old books so I'm planning on adding a lot more books as I have time.
As usual, I'll appreciate you letting me know if you see any errors in things like links or page numbers or whatever since I don't have time (or don't take the time) to go back and recheck everything.
Also, if there's anything in particular you might be interested in seeing in the library let me know and I'll see if I've got it, and if so I'll try to get to it quicker.
If you'd like to check it out, here's the address...
http://www.ezfolk.com/library
Your comments and suggestions are welcome as always!

Richard-
Just a quick glance through the library. This looks like it will be a great resource, and, if not a resource, at least a nice stroll through history!
Thanks for sharing. As usual, you have outdone yourself! Take a bow:

Thanks for the moral support Brad... that's my thinking too. Hopefully over time it will be seen as a valuable resource and not just a colossal time-waster for me!

Thank you Tony... I appreciate your vote of confidence. It's a big project and only time will tell. I need to keep pumped up enough to keep plugging away so I appreciate any encouragement I can get. There are thousands of music books now in the public domain that contain a wealth of resources. I know 10 books doesn't exactly constitute a library but you gotta start somewhere. Hopefully I can add a book or two every week until there are hundreds available. That's the plan anyway, if I don't get sidetracked or run out of steam.

By strange coincidence I conclude that your efforts are indeed a valuable resource, Richard, and are far from being a waste of anyone's time.
Today I recorded and posted Loch Lomond, by The Defoe Singers. As a song was uploading I found your post, looked up Loch Lomond and found the sheet music. We've been singing this for a while, it is much loved and enjoyed, but all the lyrics are not generally known (probably cos most folk are quite happy to sing the chorus over again). Some kind predecessor in my workplace kindly left bundles of typed lyrics to many popular ballads. But there were a few incomprensible lines, even to Scottish listeners. (The bass voice in the song is that scotsman.)
No longer. I have the words and for those who would like to hear and sing them, and there are a few, we shall have the pleasure of doing so this Friday. Thank you Richard.
Loch Lomond
it's on New Songs page
ps I have posted this; Lyrics and music available in the ezfolk library http://www.ezfolk.com/library/ in the song lyrics section, but that sort of page doesn't get many hits. I propose going through all songs I have posted and linking those that correspond back to the library entrance page. I will do the same with any of the relevant songs at mp3mart.net.
pps I feel that I have achieved an eminent status now that I belong to a club with a library as well as rehearsing rooms, auditoriums and virtual recording studios. Not to mention instrument bazaars, meeting and chat rooms and what must be now one of the best juke boxes on the planet.

Seamus... Thanks for that rousing ovation!
Gerry... That's great to hear that you've already found something useful in there!
... and thanks for spreading the word!

What a great idea, Gerry. I have followed your lead and placed this link to the library on my page:
Visit the

Public Domain Library
I can't print the code here, because the HTML would convert it, but if anyone is interested in using this for their own page, I can send you the code as an email attachment in RTF format, which should open in any word processor without converting.
Just send me a private message with your email address, and I'll send it along. Last edited on Sun Apr 9th, 2006 03:22 am by Tony Provencher

this is totally awsome, what a joy to find the library! I live for this sort of thing, I have always thought that any music older than dirt should be easily available and ready to be got, this is so much in our history that it would be a shame to let some of languish in a dusty library somewhere. Thanks!

I like it. Now I just have to learn to read music to be able to use it!

All is not lost if you can't read music... you can still use the lyrics, and they're all public domain.

I read music, Shady... do it quite often for the guitar class that I teach, but I don't do it for myself. Heck, I don't play standard tuning on my guitar, and I've never taken the time to memorize the notes of the fretboard for the different tunings on my dobros, and I've never cared to learn the notes on my banjo or my mandolin... because I like to play three-chord tunes, thus all I need are positions running through the chords (preferably low on the neck, since I'm not a fan of the tonal qualities high up the neck).
So, using the chords printed above the music, I can work through the lyrics with however I want to play the tune, without having to run through the music to figure out where the chord changes might occur. If the particular fingerpicking pattern I'm using (or even the strumming pattern) doesn't mesh with how the changes are laid out with the lyrics, I change the chord changes to fit how I'm going to do the tune.
All I want are the lyrics and chord changes so I can make up the rest. That's folk music.
(Woody Guthrie said if you make things too complicated, you're just showing off. Doc Watson couldn't read music.)

JC... Thanks for the offer. I would really like to add a lot of sheet music to the PD library but I just don't have time to do it presently. I've got several thousand pieces of old sheet music myself that I'd like to add as well as dozens of additional books but it's pretty time consuming so it's not gonna get done for a while at least... maybe one of these days.

Have you thought of using say, Project Gutenberg instead? It may cut down on costs and be more efficient in the long run?
