There's a new book/CD just out called "The Building Blocks of Bluegrass Jamming for the 5-String Banjo - Introducing the Cut n Paste Method" by Wil Huckabay. This book is designed to help the banjo player create a break to any song just by knowing the “chord formula” to the song. It teaches you how to take interesting breaks to songs you've never played before in jams in a matter of weeks or months rather than years.
It's not just another "lick" book. "The Building Blocks of Bluegrass Jamming for the 5-String Banjo - Introducing the Cut n Paste Method" gives clear instructions on how to use licks to create breaks to any song, how to find the "chord formula" to a song, lick cards for some G, C and D licks and a CD demonstrating licks and breaks to songs such as "I'll Fly Away, Man of Constant Sorrow, Will the Circle Be Unbroken and Nine Pound Hammer.
Plus, playalong tracks to all these songs in slow and up tempo. Once you learn the concept of "the Cut n Paste Method" to these songs you'll be able to create breaks to other songs just by knowing the songs "chord formula."
