I an about to die for an open back banjo to learn clawhammer on. The Dulcijo 5 string banjo looks good and sounds good and the price is where I need it to be.

A couple of questions:

Is there an advantage to the short scale and A tuning or was that a production decision? Would it be preferable to order it with med strings for G tuning?

Other companys tout the huge number of brackets on their banjos. What are the advantages to 18 brackets as opposed to 8? If the lighter build helps with vibration then would fewer brackets also help?

I have the impression these are made in NC and since I live in NC I would like to support a local builder.

Thanks,
Ernie

Hi Ernie,

You didn't say where in NC you're located, but if you're close enough to get to Hickory that's where Michael Fox and Richard Shook make the instruments. Seeing them in person would give you a good idea if you'd like them or not.

I think the biggest benefit of the A scale is that it makes them easy to play in A or D, which are the two keys most often played by old-time fiddlers. For me, I'm not into playing fiddle tunes too much so I prefer using medium strings and tuning to standard G tuning.

The banjo and Dulcijo are both made with very light drums with very few brackets, so they weigh maybe 2 pounds as opposed to the heavy duty banjos that weigh more like 10-15 pounds, but they still sound great and are easy to carry around.

Michael comes around the forums sometimes and if he sees this maybe he can add more to what I said. He's the expert.

I'm down in the flatlands. The Raleigh area. I guess it is easy enough to tune it to G and use a capo if necessary.

Thanks for responding.
