Hi All,
I mentioned in a previous post that I might change the strings on my Dulcijo shortly, well before I embark on this challenge I have a few questions ...
On the Dulcijo FAQ says that all three strings on the Dulcijo are strung with the first string from a 5-string banjo (usually a 0.9). It also says that if a tighter second string is preferred that the second string from a 5-string banjo could be used (a .11 on a light gauge set presumably?). I might go down this route but before I do ..
I have a set of “mediums” up on my shelf (10,12,15,19w,10), could I use the two 10s and the 12 or not really? If so what difference would the heavier strings make? Will it stress the instrument? Will the sound / tone change? What (anything) else could I expect?
So my choice is threefold:
- Change all 3 strings to standard .9s
- Change 1st and 3rd to .9 and 2nd to 11(?)
- Change 1st and 3rd to 10 and 2nd to 12
Any advice gratefully accepted.
Thanks,
Mark

Hello Mark
My preference if you wish to tune mostly to AAD is .9 .11 .9 Your dulcijo came with .11 on the second string. Some early dulcijos had .9 on the second string which will work. It allows you to be able to carry one spare string that fits all if you break one. I prefer a .11 to eliminate any string rattle.
I have some dulcijos now I use the light gauge banjo 3rd sting for the dulcijo 1st and 3rd string and the banjo light gauge 4th string for the dulcijo 2nd. This allows open key of A with a tuning of EEA.
Medium gauge strings will work but will make the AAD tuning strings feel tighter. Which ever you like best.
Hope this helps
Good luck
Michael

Well, I did the string change over the weekend: 9,11,9.
It was no where near as difficult as I would have thought, in fact the only real tricky bit was the knot!
