Hi all,
I am using standard dulcijo (D) tuning and wondered if someone could help me locate a couple of chords on the dulcijo. I think I may be almost there but ..
For the C Chord the notes required are C,E & G right? If so, which of 2 of the 3 should I be looking for? Is any of the following the C Chord:
G&C: Barre at 6 ..or.. C&E: 1str 6 frt 2str 4frt ..or.. G&E: 1str 3frt 2str 4frt .. or .. something completely different!
For the F Chord the notes required are F,A & C right? If so, am I right in thinking that I am looking for the A & C (I am guessing because I have no F, only #). So is this an F Chord:
1str 6 frt, 2str 7frt ..or.. something completely different!
Thanks for any help offered,
Mark

Hi Mark,
As you know, the Dulcijo is optimized for the key of D, and the 3 major chords in the key of D (D, G, and A) are easy to play. That takes care of probably 90% of the songs you'll want to play as long as you stay in the key of D.
If you're still in the key of D and need chords other than the 3 major chords, then you need to improvise by doing what you're talking about: since you only have 2 strings on which to form chords you would want to choose 2 notes from the chord you're making and just try them to see if they work.
If you're wanting to play in a key other than D then you'd want to either retune the Dulcijo and/or possibly even use different strings so you can tune differently. I was talking to Michael Fox a while back and he told me he was using a Dulcijo with different strings on it (I think it was DDG), which enabled him to play in the key of G (major chords being G, C, an D) with all the same fingering as the D tuning (AAD).
Keep in mind that the Dulcijo is designed to be simple and designed to optimally be played in one key. In my opinion, once you start straying from that 90% of songs that can easily be played in 3 chords in the key of D then you might be better off using a regular 5-string banjo or some other chromatic instrument.
