Well, I have been playing the dulcijo for almost a week now and I thought I would give a progress report. I am managing to find my way around it a little better now (not that it was difficult, just different). I have been trying loads of different tunes (mainly from Dulcimer tabs) but have been concentrating on 2 main songs, "Oh Susanna" and "Keep on the sunny side", both of which seem to sound "not too bad" at this point in my learning. I have also been playing traditional kids songs (row, row, row your boat, old macdonald, the farmers in the dell etc) as the melodies are very simple and my son (who has just turned 3) really enjoys me playing them. I haven't really got entirely to grips with the bumditty but I am working on it (I can do a basic version, as shown in Brads video but beyond that I seem to lose it a little, I need to spend some more tme with the level one tutorials). For the main part I have been double thumbing which seems to be working quite well for me at the moment but as I want to take up the 5string at some point I know I will need to get the bumditty down properly. Oh, I just wanted to back up the comments made about melodies "falling out" of the Dulcijo. This afternoon I was just plucking away, not really thinking about anything in particular when a tune not entirely dissimilar to duelling banjos came out. I played a couple of D chords, followed by a couple of As and then a couple of Ds followed by a couple of Gs. I then played the melody 2,3,4,2,3,1,2,0,1 on the 1st string and then repeated it on the 2nd string. I know its probably not accurate but it has the right feel and sounds good enough for a novice. cheers, Mark Last edited on Thu Sep 21st, 2006 06:48 pm by mark |

Hey Mark, Sounds like you're doing great on the Dulcijo! I'm going to try to get some new tabs and maybe videos in the Dulcijo section as soon as I finish up the baritone uke thing I'm working on. Hang in there!

Well I have not posted in the Dulcijo section in quite some time, so Here is my latest with the dulcijo, I have been going to a bluegrass jam for some time now and carrying my mandolin to play a few tunes and this last time I went ,I carried my dulcijo with me not knowing how it would be recieved in bluegass, People looked at it and wondered what in the world is that and did a few comments. So then when it came time for me to do a tune, I told them I was going to do ( Old Jo Clark ) in the key of D and there was another 5 string banjo player that was sitting 2 chairs down from me and I started playing and the stand up bass player came and stood next to me as I played the tune and I went tru 2 courses and pass it on to the other banjo player and then he turned it back to me and I played a couple more courses and ended the tune and the audience gave us a standing ovation as I had never had before. They told me to be sure and bring it back next time and I was so taken away with it that I have ordered another from Michael and plan on haveing two with different tunnings. Just wanted to pass this along to ever one as it was a up liftting experience for me and haveing been excepeted in to the jam with it Thanks for listening Charlie

Way to go Charlie. How about posting the song for us on the dulcijo?

Hi Preston, I am a sure it would not sound as good as that night with out the bass rhythm and other instruments to go with it, That is what holds a song togeather. I may delete the old version on my site and replace it soon to see if I have really improved any, I really don't think I have. But since I have one of Michael's fancy dulcijo coming, I had better get better or my wife may fit it aroung my neck. Charlie

Glad to hear the Dulcijo went down well with the Bluegrassers Charlie - I just wish I had someone to jam with over here (OT / Bluegrass whatever!) I am sure it would help with learning / progression. Last edited on Tue Jun 19th, 2007 05:56 pm by mark |
