Hi,

I hope someone can help me - I am a little confused.

I purchased some spare strings today (just in case!). I had to buy a full set of 5-strings because my local stockist does not sell singular strings. Now, I know from the FAQ here that the Dulcijo uses the 1st string from a 5-string Banjo for all three of its strings and that they are gauged at 0.009 and that as an alternative the 2nd banjo string can be substituted for the 2nd Dulcijo string (if a tighter string is required?).

My question is that I have no idea what the strings I have are. I had envisaged them to be like guitar strings and labelled pretty clearly with some noticable difference to their size.

The strings I have are RotoSound Swanee, Nickel Wound RS65 for a G-banjo. The individual packets are labelled RS 651, RS 652, RS 653, RS 654 & RS 655.  On the pack (and this may have no bearing or significance) part of the design shows what looks like a partial fret board with the numbers 10, 12, 15, (w)19, 10 running along them. With this info is anyone able to tell me which strings are which and which ones I can use please?

Thanks,

Mark

"...partial fret board with the numbers 10, 12, 15, (w)19, 10 running along them."

These would be the strings guages, 1st to 5th. 1st string is .010, 2nd string is .012, 3rd-.015, 4th (wound) .019, and 5th string .010.

These are pretty standard medium guage banjo strings. You may want to see if the store will swap the set for a set of lights. You could then use the 1st, 2nd and 5th strings.

I don't know if you could use the 10's & 12, but Richard or another Dulcijo player will probably check in on that.

Brad

Thanks for your help Brad,

I will get a set of lights from the store and will put these strings away for now until I get a 5-string banjo (hopefully) later in the year.

Thanks,

Mark

Mark what Brad said is true,  You can use light gage strings on the Dulcijo from a set of standard banjo strings.

I have a dulcijo and use all .009 as it came with and have had no problem so far with mine,  But I also us .009 on some of my home made instruments and what I do is order a long leight of number .009 from a supplier and cut and wind a loop in one end.

Check out   http://www.harpkit.com    and they sell single strings or bulk string by the foot.

I just notice that you are in the UK, I don't know what they charge for postage at this place, but the strings don't weigh very much, so maybe it would not cost to much.

Good luck

Charlie
