vintage banjo. with a round tag at top of neck. Magic Wonder. Bruno N.Y there is no other name on it. except maybe(grover patent)PRESTO. do i have a collectable or a Kmart special. i think the banjo dates to the early 1900's it belonged to my great grandfather. i have checked every collectable site and it seems there is no such thing as a Magic Wonder banjo.:?

Hi CP...

I think the Presto is just the tailpiece on the banjo. Have you got a digital camera? If so, how about taking 1 or more pictures and post them and maybe we can at least give you an idea if it might be a good banjo or not.

:hat:

I can't believe I sat down to search the origins of my tenor banjo, and I find someone looking for the exact same thing.  I have a tenor banjo I purchased years ago at an auction that has has a round tag with the words Magic Wonder Bruno, NY attached to the headstock with three small tacks.  The headstock is black with a single 5 point star at the apex of a rather typical arch that forms the top.  The neck is a three piece laminate of what appears to be maple and something dark (mahogany) in the middle.  The drum ring (excuse my ignorance) is a birdseye maple with 20 tuning screws to tighten the head.  The tuners appear to be nickel plated with a bone (or good imitation) turning piece.  There are 17 frets and the nut.  I'd love to know anything I can about it.

Thanks in advance for all your expertise.

Yo!  I've been collecting old banjos too.  Are you playing yours?  Hope so.  Better than let them sit round gathering dust.

I gave my tenor away.  I got it from an old friend's garage roof where he been storing it.  He'd fished it out of Benmore, the lake in South Island New Zealand.  The original owner had thrown it in.

It was unplayable, so I had it restored by an idiot.  By the time Peter Stephen, the Luthier, looked at it and made a beautiful instrument from it I'd found dulcimer.

My friend Heano has the tenor now.  I gave it to him.  He wanted it.  He was visiting.

I reckon he'd be close to wearing it out by now.  Pity he lives in Western Australia.  Bit far for a jam and he doesn't answer emails.

The long and the short of it is play while you can.  Don't worry if the instrument's valuable.  It will be if you make it sing.

Hugs.
