I am thinking of taking up the banjo, most likely clawhammer style. If I can find someone in the area I live, but may have to start with Scruggs style if not. The question is the Saga OK 2 kit good to start with for someone on a budget? I am some one who dives in head first, like wanting to do a kit to see if I can, and to know that I understand the working of it. So any input gladly welcome. I think I would prefer an open back banjo. Jeff

Jeff that kit you are talking about has a cast metal rim instead of wood, They are easy to put together, But I was not happy with it and not much value to them if you want to sale it, there are alot of banjo's if you put another hundred with it that are good, Deering make the good time banjo that is great and also made in the USA. Can't go wrong with it and if you don't like it you can sell and get most of your money back. Hope this helps some as this is only my thoughts. Charlie

Here are some kits: http://www.janetdavismusic.com/gtkits.html They also have a considerable number of banjos including Deering and others and accessories. You can scan the catalog on line, DL a copy or just browse from the linked page. Moderate price is a relative term. Here is a link to the Banjo page: http://www.janetdavismusic.com/banlist.html Good luck. You can also try http://www.music123.com They also handle some inexpensive banjos from about 180 dollars up. http://www.music123.com/Banjos-Stringed-Instruments.Music123 Last edited on Mon Aug 31st, 2009 06:02 am by theBlackman ____________________ Let each day start as a blank page for life to write upon. http://ezfolk.com/audio/dusty http://cdbaby.com/all/theblackman http://youtube.com/DustinFLeer |

I've played one of the Saga kit banjos, and I rather liked it. That particular one had good action. The geared 5th string puts it a little above many cheap banjos. It is true that it will never have very high resale value. EDIT: I found this write up of the Saga kit from "Save the Banjos": http://savethebanjos.com/Saga%20Kit%20Review.htm The gold tone banjo kits are pricey, but probably quite good. There is a great web-saga about one mans experience with one of these: http://thekimerers.com/brian/gt/index.html Grizzly Industrial Supply used to sell banjo kits, but don't seem to anymore. To bad: http://www.grizzly.com/products/category.aspx?key=235040 Stewart MacDonald also used to, but no more. You can buy all the parts, and download the instructions. http://www.stewmac.com/freeinfo/Kit_building/a-banjobuilding.html The parts could add up to a good bit of cash, but they are good parts. You can get a "Mountain" banjo from the folks at musikit: http://www.harpkit.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=0004banjo You can get the same thing from Lark in the Morning: http://larkinthemorning.com/product.aspx?p=KIT124A Last edited on Mon Aug 31st, 2009 08:48 pm by vrteach ____________________ Erich -- http://www.ezfolk.com/audio/bands/956/ http://vrteach.org |

Hey Guys, Thanks for all the advice and the links. After some research I believe I will postpone the kit idea till later. I have narrowed down my selection to three banjos: Deering Goodtime, Gold Tone CC 100R or the Gold Tone CC 50. I have read alot about the Goodtime and the CC 100. I was wondering about the CC 50. Any opinions? There is a shop 30 minutes away that is carrying all three. Price range: Call for special price. Good time: $438.00 CC 100R: $374.25/499.00 CC 50: $279.00/209.25 They all seem to be an excellent choice. Also found out that the local instructor is Warren Yates the owner of Yates Banjos. Check out the website: http://www.yatesbanjos.com/page0001.htm Jeff

I'd talk to Warren and tell him what you are interested in playing and have him help you decide which banjo to get. The CC 100R is a resonator banjo, and I don't know how easy it is to remove the resonator if you want to play it as an openback - another good reason to have somebody with experience help you. I don't know Warren, but have taken from his presence on BHO that he isn't one who would want to sell you more than you're ready for or want. STANDARD DISCLAIMER: I have no association with Yates banjos or Mr. Yates. I can only speculate on my perception of his presence on other sites.
