One on my students, a 13-year old with magnificent skills and determination arrived for his lesson with his Goldtone in one hand and a really old hard case in the other.

Opening it up, I feasted my eyes on a wonderful Vega banjo-mandolin is such perfect condition that it literally made my heart race. Evertything was perfect. Not a mark. The only sign that it had ever been used was the skin, a plastic one. The original would would have come from a sheep.

Nice craved head. Odd but functioning tuners. I estimate it as late 1800's. Sweet...

He knew I have done a number of conversions, even taking an 1890(ish) White Laydie tenor neck and making it into a cookie tin 5-sting.  But that tenor neck wasw sitting idle and probably would never be used. This was a complete instrument in perfect condition... and a piece of musical history.

So when he asked about taking the neck off and adding a 5-string neck to turn it into a clawhammer banjo, I talked him out of it.  Of course, it would make a fine open-pot banjo. But something would be lost.

I told him to save up for a clawhammer banjo and in the meantime, learn how to play the mandolin.

There, my good deed for the day is done.

" Nice craved head."

Phil, looks like your Freudian slip was drooling on your keyboard!

(He says, surpetitiously wiping the back of his hand across his mouth and chin.)

Good catch Brad. Ecce Freud. I certainly would make a good home for the instrument. But who is to say that I might not do the same thing and turn it into a five string? I even have an extra five string neck hanging around looking for a pot.

Never-the-less, he didn't offer it it. And I didn't ask.
