Hi All: It has been awhile since I have posted anything. My question is-

What is the secret for memorizing?

As long as I have the music in front of me , no problem. I have also played

Keyboard for years and have the same problem.

Still trying to learn Clawhammer Banjo and Uku, Still having fun.

Hope You Can Help

Heydaye

Hey Hayday,   That has always been a problem for me ,  But I did not start playing till I was 65 and now 75 and I blame it on old age,   But that may not be your problem.

I read the other day where some one suggested to start on the tail end of the music and learn the last lines first and then progess to the front,   I have not tried that yet.

Good luck and let me hear.

Charlie

Charlie: Thanks for the reply, we have talked B/4 , I'm 71 and started

playing uku & Banjo when I was 70, so I guess I just have to work harder.

I don't understand, I will play a piece over and over and put the music away

and it's gone.

Having Fun

Yeah I remember us talking before,  I have been going to a once a month music circle where we are not the only one haveing this problem,  I have a few gospel songs that I do and have knew the words since childhood and still have trouble with, So I keep my music in front of me,  I don't have to much trouble with the chords, But the words just go away,   So on one or two I have replaced the words to somthing I can remember  ( Such As )

The Old Time Religon

Its good enough for me---- Its good enough for my Father---- Its good enough for my mother------Its good enough for my wife    and so on and of course I us the chours in between that every time and that gives me a complete song and you can see how I am doing it.    When I use words that way, I make it thru and no one knowes the difference or cares.

I can't really help much, but I learn the tune so I can hum it.  When I can do that I learn the chords and hum and play.

Then I learn the words.  I put the musical part away and just READ THE WORDS OUT LOUD over and over.

Then I hum the tune and think the words without the "notes".  Then I put it all together.  And sing it a few times.

That will let me memorize any tune, chords, and words no matter how difficult.

I do have an inate ability to hear a tune and lyrics once or twice and if I really like it, play it without the labor given above.

I know about 400 tunes that I can play and sing any time.  Sometimes I do need to run through a song briefly before I attempt to sing it to refresh the lyrics.  Other times a song I've not sung for 20 years or more will just popup full born and usable.

I'm not intending to brag.  That's just the way it is.  I have a friend James Freeman, who sang in the 40's and 50's with the MARCHELLES, who knows some 500 tunes.  He can play or sing any of them at anytime without a split second to think about it.

Thanks I'll give it a try. I wish I had your ability to sing and play with out

many problems. I have  played Organ and Keyboard for over 25 years

and I think I can probably play 3 songs without sheet music.

Keep The Music Alive

Having Fun
