Hi

I wasn't quite sure of where to post this - im a beginner on Banjo but have been playing guitar for, well since i left school, a loong time ago :). I finger pick alot and what with using my PC for work i get concerned about RSI in my right hand fingers, which i get from time to time. At which point i normally put down the guitar for a few days and do some theory or drive the wife mad because she no longer gets to watch TV in peace.

Clawhammer appears to have a different action in the hands, so i thought why not alternate banjo and fingerstyle on different days i.e. vary my playing more.

Does that make sense? Sound like a good idea or am i misunderstanding the style (I've only got to the bum ditty picking all round the wrong way, compared to guitar, confused level :).)

Any comments gratefully recieved - about time i used that impulse buy of a banjo.

Roj

Howdy, welcome to the banjo.

Clawhammer (also commonly called frailing, and more generically called down-picking) playing differs from the usual fingerpicking in that at least part of the motion consists of striking down on the strings using the back of the fingernail. This seems awkward at first, and you will likely find it difficult to get a clear tone and consistently hit the string that you meant, but these come with practice. The result is a percussive sound that can be pleasing.

The bum-ditty rhythm is usually taught as the initial building block in learning clawhammer/frailing, and learning to do that rhythm smoothly and automatically while also getting a clear tone from the down-pick is a steep learning curve, but once there most of the rest is pretty simple.

There are a number of sources online for beginning instruction, including several on EZfolk that I expect you have found. Pat Costello has many on Youtube, posted under the name dobro33h. There are some other folks who have done similar postings on Youtube, under the names banjoland and zeppmusic.

Welcome, Roj-

You're gonna love the banjo! (or really, really hate it.)

Richard has some good basic stuff in the tab/tutorial section here, and I have two short videos on the basic clawhammer stroke on my artist page here

Don't hesitate to ask questions, we clawers are a pretty friendly bunch.

Brad

Hi Richard & Brad

Spent a while getting the hang of the bum ditty from your video clips - took a while to stop playing what sounds like a half harmonic note on the 'bum'

Got the pattern now have to get it in my hand on auto pilot :D

Cheers

Hi Again

Quote from Brad "You're gonna love the banjo! (or really, really hate it.)"

Am enjoying clahammer style as a different voice to bring to a jam - and i love the fact that i still have an instrument to play after slicing off the top of my first 2 fingers of the right hand (tiling a floor)!!! playing the guitar just hurts waaay to much.

Am in the middle of a foray (and a muddle) into sawmill tuning - love the lonesome banjo sound

HAH!! Got another!!!!!:2angdev:

I think Engels had it wrong, I think Banjo{/i] is the opiate of the people (at least the ones who are smart enough to take it up)!

Hope your hand heals quickly, and I'm glad you can still make music!

Brad
