It does seem to defy logic. But it does work. The 5th sting fits in the slot. The thumb screw tightens it and the felt pad on the bottom damped any rattle. In effect, it becomes a nut. When you tune with it in place it actually moves. Haven't had it more than a day to see what long term life is like. But for now, I'm saatisfied. I've attached it to the third string by the tuning peg when not in use as a standard place to put it. So far. So good.

I had to think about that moving during tuning thing! I guess as long as you don't fret the 5th string it doesn't matter, but if you do any fretting, I would think that the intonation would be off (string length difference).

It doesn't move much. And that movement is not a problem at all. I've never fretted the 5th string except by accident. But I don't think it would be a problem either. If the capo is acting as a nut amd all capos essentially do that, than fretting the 5th string wouldn't matter. --- Back to the new(sort of) banjos. A friend of my wife came by this morning. She saw the new instruments and I told her about how they swam into my life. I could see a light turn on behind her eyes. She once gave a dinner party, maybe thiry years ago. And a young couple attended who played guitar (her) and banjo (him) and both sang. It was the tail end of the 60's folk scene. The man was not well but no one knew it yet. A few years later he passed on. I am now making a home for his longneck banjo. Very emotional feeling. I hope he rests easier knowing his instrument will be played and respected. --- The Regal tenor was never played by these people. It was given to them in the same non-playable condition it was passed on to me. (Maybe less dusty) It went from the cellar of an out-of-business antique store, to their cellar, to my work bench, to my living room. It is the only banjo I have with a natural skin head. And it has a warm, mellow sound. While the skin is in poor condtion, I like the tone and hope it hangs together for a while. When it needs to be replaced, I'll probably put a modern head on it. Stronger, weather-proof. Bright sound...but it will loose the mellowness. Time will tell.

Epilogue: A friend gave a party last weekend. Several music people were there including the woman who gave me the banjos. I knew she would be there and made sure to bring the longneck Vega. Her gift to me was heartfelt appreciated. But it was her husband's instrument. If she had any second thoughts, I wanted them voiced before I got even more attached. She only had to ask for the instrument back and I would give it to her with my thanks for the time I had with it. As we were sitting around trading songs, I asked if she wanted to play it. (I really wanted to null any emotion.) She declined and said she was glad to see it played and enjoyed. (I sent her a painting of the instrument being played with an inscription that said her husband's banjo will have a good home.)
