Yeah- I had a great time, too!

The Vega that j-walk has puts out a real nice sound, and, like he said, a lot of that is the player.

He did have some trouble keeping the 5th string in its bridge slot, tho ;)
(on my Goodtime, not his Vega!)

We're gonna have to work on some stuff and get together again, soon.

beeconk - I play classical guitar, so I'm well aware of the in/out of tune thing with nylons (I usually just keep retuning for a couple of days before I even try to play anything on it) :X

Are the nylguts that much thicker? Do you think it probable that a new bridge and/or nut would be required to use them? Gathering data . . .

Incidentally, I am going to kill the sound clip now that I have 2 tunes up on the nylon strings. I'll redirect that link to the other songs.

Everybody is always talking about the Nylgut or LaBella strings.  Am I the only one who buys the Chris Sands strings from elderly?  I have played nylons for about 5 years now and every 9 months or so decide to check the grass on the steel string side of the fence, but always go right back to the nylons.

I have not tried the Nylgut strings but have always thought the Labella's felt like I was playing a cigar box uke with rubber bands for strings.  The Sands strings come in 3 weights (lights/meds/heavys) and are awesome.  The heavy's sound and play really well- and will last forever.

I have never been able to get the RR spikes to work.  But eventually you just learn to retune quickly. : )  Nylons can break, but it's pretty rare.

Next time you need to order strings, go for the Chris Sands Nylons.

Andrew - the first time I tried nylon strings on a banjo was a set of Chris Sands mediums on what was only the second banjo I owned - an old no-name Dobson style banjo with ivoroid violin peg tuners. I loved them - the whole banjo sounded great.

I've also tried LaBellas and, as I wrote earlier - didn't like them. Like you mention, they're just too whimpy and they fall apart too darn quick. After that I tried a set of Nylguts and I don't know if I'll ever tire of them. You really ought to try them at least once. They cost about as much as Sands strings - but they're altogether unique.

here's a few pics of that old banjo - never should have sold it off :?

Yeah- well, its back to the steel now. I broke the 5th string just over a week ago, and with a lesson coming up on Monday (last) I had to put my last spare set on. I think I was the cause of the breakage, though, because I tried once to slip it under the spike as a trial (it didn't fit). The point of separation was just about where the spike is, so I probably nicked it. It went while sitting on the bed one evening while I was doing some tabbing on the computer. The soft "twung" made me think at first that a fiddle string had let go in the fiddle case.

Anyway, I think I will stay with the steels for awhile again. If I break one, then we'll see. I probably will try either the sands or nylguts next time, but I need to check and see if the local shop carries them. Like I have mentioned before, I change strings when I break one, and usually not before,

And, I now have an official case of BAS! I played the Bob Carlin model Goldtone

yesterday at "The Folk Shop," my local store of all things musical. I want that banjo! sigh, $800+, I need to find  a winning lottery ticket.

One of the other problems I had with the Labella strings was length.  I have a long neck banjo.  Do the NylGut strings allow for about 5 extra inches than you need?

: ) I will definately try them next time!

I think they would fit - if not right off the bat - they streeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetch like there's no tomorrow. If they came up an inch short, you could probably stretch them by hand until they reached. The downside to this is that they take a day or two before you can actually play them :?

In my experience - it's worth the wait.

Andrew-

You also need to ask if they have sets for the longneck (or Pete Seeger model) banjos.
