I can feel your pain with the mando even though I've never attempted to learn anything about one (I did know the difference between the "A" and "F" styles due to watching a lot of bluegrass players).  I have tried to learn some basic scales and such on the fiddle at the suggestion of a moderately good fiddle player and the first draw of the bow brought out every tom cat in the neighborhood looking for the interloper that was invading their territory.  Sadly, I've not improved much although I hear you have to practice so maybe I need to try that before I give up entirely.
