hello. I am new to this forum, and just starting to learn banjo. I have found a lot of great tab songs on line, but I am having a hard time with some of the notations on them. is there a place to find all of the major notation marks, and what they mean?

thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Hi Allen,

Tablature tends to be a little bit different on different websites and books depending on who did it. On ezFolk there's a description of banjo tab you can find here...

http://www.ezfolk.com/banjo/Tutorials/Reading_Tablature/reading_tablature.html

I did that page a long time ago and should go back and add more to it but the tab explanation for the ukulele was done more recently and is more comprehensive. Not a lot of difference as far as what everything means. You can find it here...

http://www.ezfolk.com/uke/Tutorials/readtab/readtab1/readtab1.html

Hope that helps... let me know if there's anything particular you're wondering about and I'll try to explain it more fully.

:hat:

If you run across something you can't figure out, try asking here, too. Richard or I or some of the other folk will try our best to help you figure it out.

Be sure you state the song, what the mark looks like (if you can post a short section containing the questionable part it would be a big help), and maybe the string, preceeding and following note and fingers.

Also, who did the tabbing can be a big help.

Welcome to the WWB (Wonderful World of Banjo).

Brad

thank you for the quick responces. I am really excited about learning banjo, I have been wanting to since I was a kid, and now I have the time to learn.

I feel like a kid again, with a whole new area to explore. and I have always loved bluegrass, and C/W music.

Hi.  I also need help with some tab notations.  I've been using the Janet Davis book "You can teach yourself banjo" which comes along with a dvd to explain it all but unfortunately the dvd ends about halfway through the book and her listing of "Wildwood Flower" (the next song after the dvd ends!)  is confusing me.

It begins with two numbers over one another.  A zero on the 1st string and directly below it a zero on the 2nd string.   Then next to that there is a zero again on the 1st string and a one on the 2nd string.

Does this just mean to pluck both the strings at the same time?

I know what a hammer on, pull-off, slide, and pinch all look like but this guy here is confusing the heck out of me.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

Betty

Hi Betty,

That's a very common lick in bluegrass banjo. You play the notes at the same time, either with your middle finger and index finger or pinch them with your thumb playing the 2nd string and middle finger playing the 1st string. I think the thumb and middle finger is the preferred way of doing it.

Hope that helps!

It might help if people starting out had an idea of how the tune sounds so they can match up the tabs with real sound.

The tabs are obviously written by a more experienced picker. And while they may simplify fingering, it's still their hands doing it. So feel free to find the fingering that you can handle.

I learned how to read standard musical notation before I ever heard about tablature. So I prefer to have a melody line in notes leaving me free to personalize fingering that works for me. Tabs are a guide not a straightjacket. Never stop learning or playing a piece just becasue you got a tab memorized and practiced.

The joy comes when you make the piece your own.
