Exciting news!  Jake Shimabukuro will be at Progress Energy Center, Fletcher Opera Theatre, in Raleigh on Friday February 10, 2006 at 8:00 pm.  Tickets are already on sale at Ticketmaster http://www.ticketmaster.com/venueartist/115202/980297

For those who may not be familiar with him, he's a uke phenom from Hawaii who wowed everyone last year at the Midwest Uke Fest.  When Jimmy Buffet heard him in HI he asked him to open for him at several concerts this year and I hear he really blew everyone away.  You can get a sampling of him at his website:  http://www.jakeshimabukuro.com/

I was so thrilled when I discovered this today I went ahead and ordered tickets.  How cool that he'll be here in Raleigh.  It'll really wake up the area to uke playing.  Hope you'll all try to make it too!!

Chris

I know, can you believe they're selling them so far in advance?!! :talk:   I'm in row B, seats 113 & 114 in center orchestra.  I think we'll be glad we got them when we did as it gets closer...

I just ordered 2 tickets. Haven't received them yet, but they are supposed to be around C 116,117. I don't yet know who I will be bringing with me, but it seemed right to buy more than one ticket ;~)

I REALLY hate that I missed CUKES last weekend. It seems like I miss all the meetings that I really want to attend. Too many irons in the fire I guess.

Look forward to seeing y'all at Jake's concert (if not before if I actually make a CUKES meeting ;~)

Kurt

I just saw Jake play last night at Border's Books & Music a few miles north of downtown Chicago, part of the World Music Festival that's playing all over Chicagoland at 25 different venues.  It was his first gig ever in Chicago.  I had never seen him play before except for that Internet-circulated video of him playing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," which he played live at the performance I attended.  Jake is amazing.  He combined elements of jazz, classical, flamenco, rock, and blues in his playing style.

Thanks for that, Will!  That's my old stompin' grounds.  Really looking forward to seeing/hearing him and opening the eyes of those in this area to the versatility of the uke.  It just amazing that he's even coming to Raleigh, as we're a bit off the beaten track for some, but it just goes to show, we weren't rated the #1 place to live for nothin'!

You're welcome, and you're in for a real treat.  Jake is lightning fast on the uke fretboard.

I forgot to mention... I got this info while he signed my copy of his CD - this info is straight from Jake himself: he plays a Kamaka solid koa tenor uke with D'Addario strings, and has a transducer pick-up installed.

I just got his "Play Loud Ukulele" and it's really good.  I love that he added in a lesson!

Have you seen this article:  http://www.fretsmag.com/story.asp?storycode=10920

As some of you know I've been in contact with Jake's management to see if he might be able to do a workshop for us while he's in town.  Oh well, here's the reply I received today:

Jake is coming in NC the day of 2/10, and leaving early next morning.
I am sorry, but we can't find any time for him to do a workshop while he is in NC this time.

Thank you very much for your support.
Keep strumming....

I tried...  :(

I figured you would receive a response along thos lines Chris. But it was worth a try. I'm just looking forward to seeing the show. Do we know if he will be available after the show for autographs or the like??? Just curious.

Pete

Pete:

Regarding your question on autographs after Jake's show, his manager said "Absolutely."

There was a great article in the N&O today on Jake:

http://www.newsobserver.com/976/story/396986.html

Also, he'll be signing autographs after the concert at the table provided by PineCone, who is sponsoring the concert.

See you there!

Chris

  Hey Folks;

I'm new to all this, I've had my Jenny Uke just about a month.    I had a previous commitment for this Friday, Jake's concert but , now can make it.

Anyone have an extra ticket (fairly close) that they might be willing to sell?

Thanks much,

Barbara

Hey Barbara!

If you don't find anyone with an extra, I was looking at ticketmaster the other day and there was still good center seats in Row P (I'm in Row B).

Glad you can make it!

Chris
