Hi all,

Cukes got started over three years ago when I didn't know a single uke player, especially here in the Triangle area.  I first put the word out on meetup.com.  It took a while, but folks started showing up and there were more than I ever imagined right here in my own backyard!  Thanks to Richard, (fellow uker) for offering us space here when meetup started charging for groups at their site.

My original objective was just wanting to meet other uke players, but in those three years I've found myself enjoying our meetings less as somehow I feel into the role of organizer and all that it entailed.

When our meetings became stale and even chaotic over time I've tried different formats, even recently borrowing music from another club.  Add to that contracting space, sending out announcements, even showing up early to put out refreshments, all of which took me away from just showing up, sitting back and having fun like the rest of the gang.

Many have heard me express my distress lately by asking for someone(s) to relieve me permanently of these responsibilities to no avail.  I know it's not a pretty "job" but these tasks are necessary to keep Cukes going and probably with the help of more than just one person at that.

On the bright side, I've truly enjoyed getting to meet so many uke players and have learned so much from you all.  Thank you!  However, I really do want to step down completely at this point.

This Saturday's gathering will be my last as your hostess, and also at the venue we've been meeting at, as I have been the connection to have it there.  I do hope Cukes will transform into it's next phase, but if not, it may not be the time.

Aloha,

Chris

Hey Chris,

I'm really sorry to hear about the demise of the Cukes but I see where you're coming from. I wish that I could have been a bigger help with it but being 150 miles away makes it hard for me to do much.

I'll miss getting together with the other Carolina ukers but hopefully everybody will drop by this forum occasionally to touch base with each other. In a way one of the saddest things is that there isn't enough interest in the uke to keep it alive. Hope it's not the end of the "third wave" of uke interest... I for one will have a hard time waiting 30 or 40 more years for the fourth wave.

Well maybe we'll all run into each other at some of the big uke events, and/or maybe there's somebody who would be willing and able to take over the Cukes, which would be great.

Sorry to say I can't even make the last meeting this weekend due to a strict budget as I'm trying to get out of debt, which you probably remember me mentioning last time I saw you.

All the best!

Richard  :goodnight:

Thanks for your response, Richard.  My decision and post is not to guilt anyone, I just never thought of having to take on the role of organizer when I originally wanted to meet other uke players here in NC.  I've also found in other groups I've been in that it's important for groups to have limits on how long one person is in any role of responsibility for the good of the group.  Some keep it to time frames of six months, but usually no longer than a year.  It keeps things fresh.  I know my homeowners association has yearly elections and I'm glad for it.  Anyway, I too hope it does transform at some point and if it does, I bet it'll be better than ever!

By the way, what was the name of that book you're using for your debt free plan?  (Thanks for the reminder!)

take care,

Chris

I'm very sorry to hear of the demise of the CUKES...I certainly enjoyed every meeting I was able to make it to. Kudos to you for organizing the group and leading each get together.  Even though I missed the last few meetings, I did so look forward to attending them (only to be disappointed by last minute schedule changes on my part).

I also want to thank the other CUKES for the good times...I'll not name names as I'd be afraid to forget someone, but I wish you all "Happy Ukeing":wave3:

Thanks!

Pete

Chris,

Thank you so much for all you have done. I have eagerly anticipated each meeting only to have some major, last minute schedule conflict keep me from attending in most cases.

I am so sorry that CUKES died. I had such fun with everyone and meeting all of the participants. I only wish I could join those on 9th Street that are forming the new group but new medical problems have surfaced so that's out. Best wishes to everyone, Billie Bocetti

Dear Chris,

Let me add my voice to those who have praised your work

with Cukes.   I'm very sorry the routine became depressing for

you.  I wish I had known that it had become so, for I would

certainly have tried to dissuade you.   You were terrific in the

job.  And you were always wonderfully patient with me, clunker

that I am.

But I wasn't very good at my end.  E.g., I never got the notice

about the October meeting, which explains my absence.  I guess I

should have been more aggressive, but I thought the notice would

come to me.

Finally, although I have always been the worst player at these

meetings, that very reason would have made me happy to try to keep

the organization going.  I have access to a space at UNC-Chapel Hill,

if that wouldn't be too far for our friends.   Moreover, I have the time

and the energy to do the administrative work involved.

If it's too late, then I'm as depressed as you are.   If it's not, I

would ask you for the email addresses of all the players you know.

I'm not handy with websites, this one included, as you have no doubt

noticed from my past performance.  I can't even figure out how to send

this reply!   So I would use ordinary email.

Please just let me know which it is: too late or not too late.

                      As ever,

                        Tom Generous

Hey Tom,

That would be great if you could get the Cukes organized and up and running again! I'm sure Chris will be glad to share the list. If you don't hear from her you might want to email her directly or send her a private message through the forums.

I've been a little sporadic about making it because of the distance involved but I'd like to see it work out and I'll try to make it.

If you get something worked out let me know so I can update the Cukes webpage.

It's never too late!  I'm sending you a list of the e-mail addresses and copying everyone on the list so they know what's going on.  Thank you for being so "generous" Tom to take on this roll!  And thank you, Richard, for being willing to post updates to ezfolk as Tom sets dates for the meetings.

Cukes lives!  I'll look forward to attending meetings as much as possible.

Thank you (both) again!

Chris

Tom, You are a jewel to resurect CUKES. I hope that I will be able to attend when it all starts up again and that these forthcoming sessions will not be @ night. Tom, you are not the worst player but who cares who is good or bad. The object is to be together and play and have fun. YES? Billie B.
