Well, I've troweled the pages of this fantastic site for ages now but just signed up and this is my first post. Some of you may know me from the Flea Market or 4th Peg.

I am stuck in Oklahoma and have been for a long time. I am nearly halfway through a masters degree and after looking high and low and far and wide for a place to relocate once I begin the job search.

After months of looking up census data, crime stats, ordering travel and vacation brochures from about 25 of these united states, we have concluded that the place for us is the Asheville area. Not really deadset on that particular point, but North Carolina in general has a certain magic to it. We have passed through there before and have traveled widely within the USA, so we aren't completely in the dark about where we don't want to be and where we WANT to be.

Of course, I will have to go where the best job is, but I'm really gonna be hoping for your beautiful state.

SO, would it be okay to accept me now as an honorary member? At meetings you all could hoist a beverage in my memory and add me to the roll call (in spirit form, of course.)

Now, I know you guys and gals are still reeling from Jake's recent performance, but if anyone feels like sharing any feelings or thoughts, good or bad, about North Carolina, I'd love to hear it!

Thanks so much for your time and for having me on board.

I don't really know anything about NC, but I do know you should go to East Asheville Hardware before you go to Lowes.

Hi Griffis,

Welcome to ezFolk and to the Cukes! I'll make you an honorary member even though I don't have any say-so in the matter. Chris is the one who has organized the Cukes group but she's not always on ezFolk so I'll roll out the Welcome Wagon to you. It's a small group but a lot of fun.

The Cukes meetings are in Raleigh so if you move to Asheville you better pack a lunch if you're going... it's 250 miles from there.

I live in the Charlotte area, kind of in between, so I'm about 100 miles from Asheville and 150 miles from Raleigh. If you get a job in Charlotte maybe you and I can get a local uke group going. I'm basically the lone ranger of uke in this area as far as I can tell.

Asheville has a huge uke community though. I've been up there a couple of times for uke events and there seems to be a lot going on. That's where Mad Tea Party is from and I think they've had a lot of uke influence up that way. There's a big folk community in Charlotte but it tends to be more along the lines of fiddle music, old-time mountain stuff, bluegrass, and that type of thing.

So what kind of work are you going into when you graduate? Where are you going to school in OK? My daughter went to the University of Oklahoma as an undergraduate and grew up mostly with her mom (my ex-wife) in Tulsa.

Hi Griffis!

You're in - as a honorary member!  I think the only requirement for membership is a desire to enjoy the uke, and spread the joy of it!

As far as NC goes, I relocated here (Durham) from Chicago in 1988 and would only return if it weren't so cold and expensive.  Having a kinder winter climate is great!

Asheville, with the mountains and a varied artsy and New Agey community has a mild summer climate, but since you're in the mountains, definitely a winter season (with  snow regularly) and not much in the way of snow plows, which I never quite understood.  There also is quite a uke community there, including a couple bands, The Hula Cats and Mad Tea Party.

Where I live (the Raleigh/Durham area) it tends to be very humid and buggy in the summer, and continues to be that way the further you head towards the ocean, but a very mild winter (usually no snow).  It's also more of a metropolitan area  and nearby Chapel Hill and Carborro, are very artsy and progressive....  We're located relatively close to the beach to the south & east and the mountains to the west, so I can get my fix in either direction.  Politics are as expected in some areas being in the South, so choose wisely...

If you do move to NC, hope you'll join us for a Cukes meeting sometime.  We have people come in from all around the state like Mt. Airey, Gastonia, Pinehurst, and even the Outer Banks, so it's not just locals.

Chris

Hey Richard! What a coinkidink-- I am attending OU now for my masters (Library and Information Studies-- hope to find a job in a university or archival library, but I've worked public libraries and like that too)--AND I've lived in Tulsa off an on since the mid-80s. My mother lives there now in fact.

Yeah, I am sure the whole state has a lot to offer. I've heard a lot about Chapel Hill. We do have our eyes set more on the Asheville-to-Boone area. We want to be closer to the mountains. I am tired of muggy, buggy summers and I grew up in Minnesota so I welcome winter snow.

However, I think we'd be hitting Raleigh fairly often as I've promised the wife that we'd make it to the coast as frequently as possible!

I really appreciate the info and the welcome to CUKES. Hopefully I will be able to attend meetings in the flesh in another year.

Take care all, and thanks again!

Hey Griffis... that is a coinkidink! The mountains of NC really are nice. Raleigh's nowhere close to the beach though. It's about 130 miles from Raleigh to Wilmington, which I think would be the closest beach, but it's not as popular as the Redneck Riviera (Myrtle Beach), which is about 200 miles from there. That's about the same distance as it is from Charlotte.

Good luck on the job hunt. Let us know how it goes.

:hat:
