Ladies And Gentlemen,

I am a new EZFolk member (though I've been lurking around as a Guest for three months - since I bought my first Uke -Electric Applause Ovation-).

The other night a girlfriend was lamenting to me about a recent break up - and we put together some silly limerick; i thought it'd be great to write a foolish song and play it for her on the uke to make her feel better.

The song is called "Texas Took My Love Away". I was hoping someone (or many someones) could help me with the music and/or improving the lyrics? We live Down Island, and I'd hoped to give it a tropical sound.

Many thanks, in advance, for direction/suggestions/etc!

Texas took my love away
that land of desert, wind and thorns
cowboy boots and cattle horns
where never ocean's mighty roar
upon the tepid gulf coast shore
Texas took my love away.

Mesquite Bush and Juniper Trees
seduced him from my palm frond's breeze
cactus, sagebrush, horses, sand
the muddy, sluggish Rio Grande
have won him from this lush and green
hybiscus, seajade, jasmine scene
Texas took my love away

I see upon his lovely face
the transformation taking place
eyes that sparkled in the tropical sun
pinched and dried in the desert one
his lips, his cheeks, his chocolate hair
cracked and brittle from the sunburned air
the skin my fingers oft carressed
brown and leathered from duress
His equatorial ruddy glow
Toughened now a murky Sallow
Texas took my love away

Darn that cheap and tawdry whore
With bangles, rouge, and tricks galore
who, from this balmy island nest
snatched my lover from my breast
i sit beside the rocky shore
i surf, i fish, but laugh no more
alone upon my uke i play
for Texas took my love away

Cuidate,
-Skidtz-
ps. if this is not the right location for this post, please let me know where better to locate it!

Great lyrics.  Don't need improvement.  Now I wanna hear it as a song.  By the way, is it a true story?

Yes... that's rather the problem. I don't know how to write songs. :(

Any suggestions?

Oh... And yes. Very true. All the tragedy and drama and late nights in the hammoc over a bottle of wine. Poor girl. But she'll be fine, I wager. :)

Skidtz, If you have a moment, take a look, or a listen to a vesion of your song on my section of the MP3 cache. I'd post it here but the cut and paste function seems to be off-line tonight.

I simplified a bit. It's in B-major and I tried to give it an island lilt. Forgive the voice.

Philj, great job on the song.  It looks like we have a potential for another great songwriting duo in the tradition of Learner and Lowe or Gilbert and Sullivan; Philj and Skidtz ( or Skitdz and Philj).  The song has just the right Island flavor and the lyrics are spot on.

Thanks Preston. I hope Skidtz isn't pissed off at the wonton or is it wanton (one's a soup, the other is disregard) hash I made of his lyrics. Mispronouced a few of the words I kept too.  Another little adventure in multitracking.

Phil- the former is the soup (wonton) the latter is disregard (wanton)- I think! :)

I dunno. I was in a small, awful Chinese restaurant and what they did to the soup was wanton destruction.
