Ok, folks, there was a previous thread about "Strange Music"

http://www.ezfolk.com/forums/forum7/2309.html

(BB)
When I was in Junior College in the early 60's, I went to an aftergame party at a friend's house. The band consisted of a 2 guitars and a stand-up bass. They were playing a basic honky-tonk riff when I walked in.

45 minutes later, one of the guitars stopped and handed his instrument to me. I stepped into his place and played (the same riff) for an hour, then he stepped (staggered?) back over and took his axe back. During my stint the bass had passed through 2 players, and the 2nd gutar was changed soon after I stepped down.

The party lasted until the sun started to rise, and the music never stopped and never changed tunes. Mellow enough for everybody, good slow dance beat, just loud enough to be well heard by all, but not so loud that the conversations going on around the livingroom had any trouble being heard by the participants.

Best gig/party/dance I've ever been to!

I'm gonna go cut a take of the riff to post - it should be up later this afternoon!

:sneaks:

EDIT: Ok, here's the riff - nothing fancy. Turn the lights down low, grab your favorite gal/guy (since we have musicians of both persuasions here) and a beverage, settle back in a beanbag chair, and be cool, man.

Take II

play hi-bitrate  (mp3 - broadband)
play lo-bitrate  (mp3 - dial-up)
download hi-bitrate  (5.22 MB)
download lo-bitrate  (668.76 KB)
view song information

Incidently: I do believe this is the one and only time I ever played an electric guitar for any length of time (it wasn't mine)!

Philj then responded with this: (After determining that the riff is in Emajor.)

Check out Brad's Blues. Third tune down the list.

play hi-bitrate (mp3) (broadband)
play lo-bitrate (mp3) (dial-up)
download hi-bitrate (3.41 MB)

So, now the ball is in your court! download the file Take II and add your own track to it, upload it, and lets see what everybody can come up with. Instrument is your choice, what you want to do over the bass line is your choice. If you want to add more than one instrument, your choice. But I hope that this will be a collection of original tunes built over a common bass line.

Show me what you got!

:horn:

What's wrong, folks? Nobody plays Honky Tonk?

Or are you all waiting until September? That's tomorrow.

I figured for sure that I could get Dean to do something, this is right up his alley! How about UkeForever? Lots of room to let that Tenor wail.

Or is this going to just   :2flush:  ?

Well- here it is, my attempt at doing something with the tune. (Once I get going with a shuffle, wild horses can't drag me away.)

Take II with shuffle.

No problem, Brad. If you're doing that vocal for me, that's the least I can do for you. :D

The following is sick and wrong on so many levels, not the least of which is that the added track was played on an 1890's fretless banjo.  After you guys get your chuckle from this I'll take the file away (and burn it [and I don't mean to a disk]).

Lyle -

This is the kind of stuff I was hoping to get! That's great! That fretless fits with my old Goya perfectly - in fact, you should send me that banjo so the two of them can get acquainted!

Thanks BB, but I have a strict "no dating policy" for all but one of my banjos.  They've seen enough action.  In fact, the action on that particular fretless is already quite high (almost half a centimeter over where the 12th fret would be if he had any frets).  And I'm sure your Goya wouldn't be interested in the only banjo to which my "no dating policy" doesn't apply.  He's an unloved 1971 Sears banjo with a busted string that I make live in the basement.

Just cut and paste? It can't be that simple.

I don't remember the harmonica part being on the original, or am I being dim and not realising that that's what you mean when you say "the additional stuff"- Phil? :)

Maybe a little.

I played Lyle's banjo/guitar track back into my basement while Adobe Audition recorded it.  Then played the previous piece I did with Brad's part, adding the harmonica. Then I cut the banjo part to the middle. Cut out a verse where I coughed. Tried to make the transitions smooth(ish) (sort of). I had trouble with the levels of Shady's take. A few nips and tucks. A fade in and out. Voila.

I played everything into my basement for a reason. I wantd the room tone to modualate Lyle's track, Brad/Phil and Brad/Phil(harp). Seemed like a good idea.

Years ago, I worked in ad agencies. We paid through the nose for talented sound pros to do things anybody can with easily available software. Of course, making it sound good...

When I get ready to go pro, you'll be my mixer, Philj!

This is starting to take a life of its own - some little backalley dive* with small round tables occupied by couples dressed in black (women in tight black slacks and sweaters, men in black denims & tees), goateed (men), long hair caught in ponytails (both). Candles flickering on the tables, an expresso machine chuffing away in the back. In the front corner, a raised stage with a multi-pieced band sitting on stools plying their instruments (maybe a piano player tickling the ivorys). At the end of the piece, there is the soft murmurs of "cool, man," "far out," "groovin'," and sharp pops as fingers snap in appreciation.
:2artist:

Or did I just date myself again?

Brad

*Probably named something like: "The Cravenous Curmudgeon."

Right, "Doc. Vic Frankenstein's Dungeon Bar and Grill," featuring (it's a)LIVE(!) music and serving questionable cuts (of music).

LyleK

P.S. - But in seriousness, it's pretty amazing that in the end it seems to have worked.
