Dusty Lear (aka "The Blackman") wrote a catchy tune called "Another Open Mike" that enough people have expressed an interest in that it was mentioned we should try it as a co-op song. Everybody is welcome to record it in their own way. It's easy to catch on to and to play, and I'm including a link to the MP3 as well as the chords and lyrics that Dusty sent me. If any of you make a million bucks with it Dusty's gonna want half (maybe more). I'll let Dusty add any comments he wants to make about it.

It would be great to hear a good variety of styles and instruments.

play hi-bitrate (mp3) (broadband)
play lo-bitrate (mp3) (dial-up)
download hi-bitrate (2.83 MB)

I hope you all have fun with this.  Do it as a gospel tune, a waltz, or a rap anything you like.

And here is a newer cut:

play hi-bitrate (mp3) (broadband)
play lo-bitrate (mp3) (dial-up)
download hi-bitrate (2.57 MB)

Any member of this site is welcome to use this tune (if they wish. Take note AMYDK) for any Open Mike or public performance, paid or not.  But please don't use it on a CD or other commercial venture.

You all have free use for anything else, but I do want to retain CC ownership.  Thanks and:  Give 'er hell, Charlie. :)

The love of my life says that it should be chorus, verse, verse, chorus, verse verse, chorus.  But I like it with a chorus in between each verse.  If you really think about it, the chorus acts like the first bars of a verse.  And that is kind of the feeling I was looking for with the "bridge" at the front instead of the back of the verse as is common.

But then again I'm a nut anyways. :hammer:

Tsk! Hush up and take your 9 cents per copy like everyone else. :P

Hey Dusty... I took a crack at it and just uploaded my take. I mixed it up a little by doing it on clawhammer banjo in the key of G with a little bit of harmonica in the background. I also went with your wife's idea of doing two verses between each chorus.

play hi-bitrate  (mp3 - broadband)
play lo-bitrate  (mp3 - dial-up)
download hi-bitrate  (2.79 MB)

Great song... it was a lot of fun. Hope it becomes a big hit for you.

I like it Good tempo, and very nice "harup" backing.  The runs for the lead in to the verses is great.

Well Dusty you really know how to make a challenge for some one that don't sing, But I will do it any way, It will take me a week or so to do it,  I don't care for rapping, but if I have to I will,  ( just kidding )

I really liked this song when I first heard it and told Dusty so.  I am happy to add my version to the co-op songs.  This is only about the 4th time I have recorded my voice and it's a little fiightening for me, but I can really relate to the lyrics, as Friday night I have my first "gig".  I am playing and singing for a church group of about 60 people, and I am more than a little nervous.

The playing and singing are a little rough but this is about my 15th take and it's one in the morning, so it's the best I have to offer.  I look forward to other recordings of this song from the rest of you,

play hi-bitrate (mp3) (broadband)
play lo-bitrate (mp3) (dial-up)
download hi-bitrate (1.87 MB)

Hey, Preston Good job!  When you relax a little and "belt" it out a little more you will be surprised.

For your "first" you did extremely well.  Have more confidence in your voice. You are not bad at all.

Take your time Charlie if you peek at the Shady Grove co-op you'll see some posts a month after the event.  I know you'll do a killer job.

True enough. But I'm a greedy Gemini who wants both. I record my tunes and get whatever the market will bear for my CD and if someone else wants to cover one I get my 9 cents a copy too.

In truth though, if someone wanted to cover one of my tunes (on a recording... anyone who wants can play 'em live as long as they say who wrote it) I'd probably cut 'em a better deal.

As has been said before... at my level I don't need to worry about piracy, I need to worry about obscurity!

'Nough said! :)

Just think, you can be the richest man in the graveyard. :P

So... When do we get your ingenious interpretation?  Not that you don't have enough superlative material of your own.

PS:  I confess a little envy.  I do like the Seattle area, or even more north near the San Juans.  I used to summer there on Waldron Island.

Worked the Snowqualimie Weyerhauser mill for a while back in the 50's.  Just outside of North Bend.

I'm afraid that with the noise level I have to battle around my home (I live right smack downtown) I get little recording done. When I can squeeze in a bit it's my material. The pipe dream is that I'll eventually end up with a solo CD.

Dusty, thanks for the kind words.  I recorded this at 1:00am and didn't want to wake anyone up, so I sang softly.  Your kind words gave me enough confidence to sing a lot louder and better tonight at my first "gig", a church social with an audience of 53 people.  I sang " Ridin' Down the Canyon", a Gene Autry song on my baritone ukulele.  My wife says I did great (but then again, she is my wife.)  I also did an instrumental  medley on my soprano, and can't believe all of the mistakes I made on songs I can usually play in my sleep.  The audience was very kind anyway.  It's amazing what fear can do to your playing.  But, just like the lyrics of your song, I look forward to the next "open mike."  There's nothing that can beat applause. By the way, I have listend to a lot of songs on your web page and admire your singing, playing and writing a lot.  I am 59 years old and just started playing uke in Nov.  Never played a musical instrument or sang in public before.

HH, you'll have your CD sooner or later.  As long as you keep your dreams alive, they will come through.  I'll be patient and wait for it. :hat:

Glad you "survived" Preston, that first performance that changes from "Can I do this?" to "My god I made it." is the hardest one.

And it's always the tunes you have done so often you can do them in your sleep that you/me/everybody messes up.  Goes with the territory.

A little hint: When you blow the lyrics, just vamp a bridge with the instrument.  Everyone who has played in public has done that.  It's no big deal.  Just aim your gig at the friends you know are in the audience.

It really does get easier each time you do it.

Hope to hear some more tunes from you now that you are no longer a "virgin." :)

PS: Thanks for the kind words.

Preston,  You are a natural with the ukulele and your singing is great, If you would subject your self to a open mic that quick, you are a natural

I remember a few years back when I was at a group and we sit in a circle and as your time come to do a song, I told them I could not sing, they told me I could, so I did attempt a song and the guy next to me said, Boy you can't can you.  I have tried a lot of times from time to time and my voice is so bad some times I can't talk, The doctor said it is alot of the medication I have to take that causes it for my asthma.

We will be looking for more from you soon.

Charlie

Charlie, everyone can sing unless they are tone deaf.  From listening to your music and your singing, I know you aren't.  I have been told I can't sing also, mostly by my mother.  It took a lot for me to record myself, but  even if I am not Roy Orbison, I enjoy singing along.  I sang in public at a church social last night and I have never been so scared in my life.  My wife, and many others, told me that I did great.  I am so glad I am over that hurdle and I feel much better about myself now.

I don't know if you have seen the movie "Walk The Line" about Johhny Cash.  Reese Witherspoon plays June Carter Cash and does all of her own singing in the movie and boy , is she good.  In an interview I read, she said that as a young actress taking acting lessons, she sang once and her acting teacher told her not to sing in any part she got in the future and told her she couldn't sing.  She has acted all of these years and never sang until this movie.  She won an academy award for her part. Just goes to show you not everyone who comments is an expert. By the way, I don't think Bob Dylan is a great singer, but he has sure sold a lot of records.  I look forward to you next song.

Hey Preston,  I have the song done, but it is so embarrassing that I hate to let any one hear it, I mean really bad,  I can't get the words to come out at the right place.

I have always been this way and I keep telling people that I can't sing and they don't believe me and most of the time people will say that it was good and they know its not, so rather than letting them lie about it, I will just let it go as I can't sing.

I play my instrument before 50 or 60 people a week at nursing homes and it works good for me, till it comes to singing, that is a different story.

Now I did tell Dusty that I would do it and so I guess I had better put it on here so I don't go back on my word.

Charlie

Well people here is my feeble attempt to do the song,  It sounds like I have been there at the bar drinking for hours before my turn.  Thats about all I can say for it.

play hi-bitrate (mp3) (broadband)
play lo-bitrate (mp3) (dial-up)
download hi-bitrate (1.74 MB
